Oil Dipstick Accuracy

I changed the engine oil at the weekend including the filter (old element type). The car was on the level and I let it drain for a good half hour before refilling. After pouring in just under 5 litres the dip stick is showing it to be overfull by about 5 mm. This is very annoying because the system is supposed to take 5.1 litres. Does anyone else find this?

Yes, never had a car yet that takes the full amount specified in the manual at an oil change. However, have you started the car yet, some will "disappear" into the filter as it fills the bowl up. I always refill and leave it about a pint (0.5 ltr) short then top up to bring the level up to the maximum. Then crank the engine over until the oil light goes out and check it again when it has all settled.

Not long enough, leave it overnight to ensure the engine AND oil has cooled and fully drained.
On modern trucks there is an electric oil measure gauge and despite telling the drivers, do not use the gauge until the engine and oil is thoroughly cold they still forget and do the engine oil level check maybe halfway through the morning after their mid morning break. After a week the sumps are brimming ! Try overnight and see what the measures are.

Have you got the felt washer on the dipstick?
That's about 5mm thick.....

Steve, have you got the felt washer on your dipstick? If not you will get a false reading/level. Without a washer, the level shown on the dipstick is more/higher than the actual level.

Because the dipstick enters the oil at an angle, the slightest bend will alter the reading. It also depends on which way round it is inserted
