    Oh nuts!

    Or bolts actually.

I took out the seats for a complete recarpet. Then I noticed that i had 4 short and 4 long bolts.

So - quick question. Are the long bolts meant to be on the door sides or in the centre of the car?

    Thanks in advance.

    Steve,

Not massively helpful I'm afraid, but when I recently had both seats out for some floor pan treatment all 4 bolts on my seats were exactly the same length ('74 mk2). I think mine were the originals as I had the same sort of bolts of my old Spitfire.

They look as though they should all be the same:

Did you still have the 4 spacers (WM 84) under the rails ? All 4 bolt are the same ...

And the original bolts were what I call 'starter' bolts. That is they have a short, thinner, unthreaded section at the end of the bolt that helps to locate the bolt in the hole before it starts turning in the threads of the captive nut.

This type of bolt is used in a few places around the car.

              Cheers

              Julian

Well I'm afraid you all got the answer wrong. Either that or I'm wrong while everyone else is correct - which is impossible :-)

yes i see now that they're all meant to be the same length. (Julian - yep, they all had run-in thread missing tips)

in the end i put the longer nuts on the middle-car side.

It took - on average - almost an hour to do each bolt!

The reason being that I had put down a layer of dynamat which was then covered by foam sound insulation.

What I wan't ready for was sound insulation stuff on the underside of the coverdale carpet. The carets are really very good but the effort in getting the damn bolts through all three layers has left my fingertips in a rough old state.

I've been working on the car until 1 am. I really wanted it ready for a concert-festival on Saturday (Penn).

Thanks for all your help - I can always rely on this place for education and tips etc

Next to tackle - making room in the centre console so that the buttons can be installed! Trusty stanley knife at the ready...

                Thanks again, all !

                Steve
