Not as far as I know.. Mine made a horrible screeching noise yesterday. To be investigated yet.

No They don't. The speed you drive Al the motor is trying to get out from under the bonnet.

Mine don't, and at 40 yrs old I would doubt any car had that feature back then.

I remember dad's MK I Escort kind of had this feature. The washer pump was a rubber bulb on the floor and surrounding the bulb was a wiper switch (round metal with the bulb protruding in the centre) So when you washed the windscreen, the wipers automatically did at least one sweep.

Quite a clever design for its time. Then they went to electric motors and his MK II escort didn't do it.

i know its not standard, but shouldn't be hard to modified just tap into the wiper circuit when using the washers

Hi everyone i have a Mark 2 1977 Stag and i have a problem although my wipers work ok, when i push the side of the wiper stalk in to wash the screen i hear the motor vibrate but no water is distributed on the screen, is it possible the tubing from the washer bottled could be blocked. I purchased the car a few days ago but the car has been hardly used any help would be great

That's possible. Starting at the pump disconnect each section in turn and try the pump. Clear the nozzles by blowing air back through them or a piece of fine fuse wire. Also the foot valve on the end of the suction pipe may have failed or have dirt in it. Hope this helps. In NZ working washers are part of the MOT if fitted.
                  Cheers Ian A

They do that a lot. And as you just bought it you don't know if it ever worked. ... New, but again not exactly the same tops are available from the usual suppliers. Someone on here wrote about fixing the pump a few weeks ago, there is a search function top right of the page. Part of the MoT here also.

                      Welcome.

It could also be a case that the wires are connected wrongly. Try swapping them over at the pump. It is also known for the teeth on the rubber impeller to break up inside the pump.

There wasn't a non-return valve fitted to the suction pipe originally. This is an aftermarket mod. Worth fitting one if it hasn't been done already.

If its the original top there will be two contacts on either side of the motor with one of them having a slit in the top below the + contact and the plastic connector having a lug that matches......

I had this problem just a week ago - the washer pump was whirring but no fluid was coming out of the jets. This was my fault finding process:
                          1. Remove washer tube from pump, operate the pump and confirm fluid coming out. Fit tubing back if OK. If not OK the pump/washer bottle pickup must be fault found.
                          2. Remove tubing from washer jet inlet, operate the pump as above, if fluid is coming out then the jet assembly must be blocked (as it was in my case).
Disassembling the jet assembly showed than there was crud in the two jets themselves which was removed with a small piece of wire and some methylated sprits.
Once cleaned the jet assembly was refitted and hey presto - lots of washer fluid being pumped to the windscreen...problem fixed!
I love deadlines - I like the whooshing sound they make as they pass by!
