    Full Wiring Loom Assembly

    Hi all,

    Questions

    Questions

The Full Wiring Loom Assembly seems to be out of Stock at Rimmers and at Autosparks.co.uk

My concern is the Car is over 40 years old and the Wires feel hard and brittle. The last thing I need is an Electrical Fire.

Should I Replace the Loom ?

    Who Sells them ?

My MK1 Stag has a MKII Alternator and is bypassing the Regulator box so I have spare wires dangling in the Engine bay.

The Ballast Resistor Wires are also no longer being used.

Should I Test the Wiring ? or Just Replace IT.

I have a New Volt Meter which I have only used a couple of Times when trying to find out why the engine kept over heating.

I have NO Idea how to Check Wires. I guess I can tape up the Ballast wires. I need to check if the Brown wires used for the MK1 Alternator are Live

How do I check this with my Volt Meter ?

Also, How many Earth Straps should there be under the Bonnet ? And Where ?

I hope there are some Electric Loom Experts out there ?

    Many Thanks, Nick

Couple of things which will help:

    Earth everything

Read a good book on auto-electrics; especially ones which focus on British cars. They go into basics such as using a multimeter. A device with a 12V lightbulb is also very useful on these cars. I got a book that somebody (Dasdrew I think) recommended and it is indeed, very good.

I had to earn from scratch and had a lot of electrical faults to figure out. I quite like auto-electrics although the whole ignition system still has me baffled and i still make silly mistakes.

    Good luck

on my mk2 there is one earth strap on the engine that goes from the negative side of battery to inner wing then onto bottom of block near the alternator.

I found most of the loom was actually very good apart from the heat baked wiring in the engine bay, I cut that back to good wire and soldered new wire in.

I'm pretty competent with electrics as my 2nd hobby is car audio but the interior lamps of the mk2 had me stumped, non of it made sense and still doesn't so I gave up with it!

Try the MK1 which switches the + side of the circuits....

If you have the car apart and have time to wait, l would get a new front loom. I did for mine and it sorted out all those PO bodges and cut cables. The rear were ok. Plus you can add any wires you need.

YES - I want a new Loom. But from where ? I will see if LDPARTS have them. Does it need to be a MK1 LOOM > > ?

Hi Mark,These stumped me originally so I did a lot of research and, eventually, worked out how they work and, once you get them clear in your head, they're relatively straightforward.I posted a guide to how they work which is in the technical section of the forum now.CheersJulian

thanks Julian, yeah, I saved a copy of those notes (I think they are what you are talking about), if I ever have the interior completely in pieces I'll rewire them from scratch, the problem with old cars you just don't know what previous owners have done and it could be something real simple. from what I remember though it just didn't make sense! at least I have puddle lamps and footwell lamps working! the t-bar lamp works in a fashion but funny things start to happen when you press the switch in the centre console!

That is almost invariably because the wires are incorrectly connected on the back of the switch. It is imperative that they are in exactly the correct position.CheersJulian

Speak to Autosparks. I had a new loom made up when my car was restored. They used my old mk1 loom as a template as they didn't have records for my vehicle. As malc4d says the mk1 switches the +ve side of the cable for things like door switches etc. so you need a mk1 loom if your car hasn't been altered in this way.

I checked, double checked and triple checked the rear of the switch with the wiring diagrams! I've stopped worrying about it now though and moved on!

Mark check the correct wiring at the t bar light. The black wire is not earth up there.

Yes you will need a MK1 loom or you can make your own up..

                            Yes, I understand I need a MK1 Loom.

But what about my MKII Alternator ? The Car has old MK1 Alternator Wires hanging about and the redundant regulator box. Not to mention the Balast wires I no longer use.

                              Hi

This is a common problem with classic cars.

Electrical circuit schematic diagrams are readily available but only....If only we could acquire the wiring loom maps?

Or perhaps some one knows where these are available?
