My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Me too, into post office with V5 changed to historic, new V5 received and a refund for the outstanding balance of the tax a couple of weeks later.

Guys, sorry to labour this thread but I'm still a little confused (or maybe a lot!) and would appreciate a definite yes/no please. According to my cars heritage certificate it was built 7/4/1975 and first registered 2/5/1975, if I read this thread right it sounds like it wont be tax exempt until April 1 2016 despite already being well over 40years old? Just had tax renewal notice (runs out 31st August) and at £230 for a year this is worth my while being me clear about this! So is it tax exempt now for this renewal and worth a trip to the post office, or yet another year of paying road tax?

You need to tax it for another year, then register it for Historic next April, you will get refund for unused months.

Thanks Bob, as I suspected then, another £230 year for a handful of miles. Oh well at least there's next year to look forward to :-)
