Its a breather Aich the clue is in the nameOriginally posted by HersnotHis View PostHi
With no pin I would be concerned that at full running temp oil would be expelled via this vent?
TBH not sure how this valve is supposed to work but since I cleared mine the Diff leak has reduced considerably. Perhaps somebody can explain how this valve is intended to operate?

Yep, that's pretty much what the original is. It's slightly splayed out on the inside of the diff to avoid it falling out but I'm sure you can manage something. As I see it, it's just a hole - as a breather - and the split pin is intended to stop too much crap getting in.CheersJulianOriginally posted by PhilB View PostI will cut down a split pin, open it a bit, squeeze it in and job done is my guess

As Julian say's the breather is just a hole to vent the case, the split pin, because it is loose, can rattle around in the hole and keep it from becoming blocked from a build up of road dirt.Originally posted by HersnotHis View PostHi

I found my diff was over full when checking, also after about three years ownership. I let some drain out but have always had what I thought was a leak but it seemed to come from the top of the diff. Just made it wet with oil but not dripping on the floor. I'm now guessing the overfill is causing leakage via the breather when hot. Does that make sense? JohnOriginally posted by HersnotHis View PostFirstly check that you have filler plug level with diff both side to side and back to front. Unless it was hot when checked any excess should not "pour out" it is SAE 90 or 95 and should creep, fall or or "well" out at most.
Most important check however is ensure breather valve on top of diff is free to move up and down as otherwise if blocked/jammed pressure can build up in diff which could give rise to expelling of oil particularly if duff is not level (back higher than front)
I had a diff with a small leak and found that on inspection the breather was blocked . I then decided to drain the existing oil repeatedly using compressed adapted 500 ml PET drink bottle. I the refilled the same bottle with new oil and squeezed it in. Have now realised that I can get a Sealey Oil Syringe/Pump for about £8 on Amazon to make this job (and others!) easier.
