    Ignition Warning Light

Can anyone explain why the ignition warning light does not always come on when I turn on the ignition? I have checked the bulb. It is OK. When the engine is running above tickover the volt meter reads 14.5 volts.

I moved this question to the appropriate forum section for you....

Need a bit more info Martin - Mk 1 or 2? And do you have the 11AC with separate regulator and warning light control, or the later ACR or similar unit?

      Thanks Russ.
It is an early Mk2 with an 18 ACR alternator (Comm. No. LD20238). Not sure whether relevant but the oil pressure and PDWA lights operate as expected.

Are you saying the light doesn't come on at all? Even briefly when you switch off?

Quick check - remove the plug from the back of the alternator, find the brown yellow wire that is attached to the small terminal in the plug and using another piece of wire, earth this brown yellow and switch the ignition on.

If the warning light comes on, the alternator really needs replacing. If it doesn't, then follow the brown yellow back through the loom and look for hardened brittle wiring that may have broken....

The brown yellow ends up at the warning light so it may take a while and some dismantling to find the problem...

        Good luck, and have fun

This is an intermittent fault. When it is misbehaving, no, the light doesn't come on at all, even briefly when switching off.
Most of the time it behaves perfectly. Does it matter if it does not work occasionally? Can it cause any harm or cause a drain on the battery?
