How to check alternator Reg??

Whilst driving this weekend I noticed the ignition light on,I suspected an alternator fault ,parked up only to find the battery had drained.
After ringing the missus and getting the stag jump started I got back home and checked the battery and dropped a meter across it to find no charge when started.
I charged up the battery with a trickle and took the alternator out.
Now I've got a guy to put new brushes and bearing in,is there any way I can check if the regulator is ok ???I've priced one up just in case.
Also has any one got a picture of one wired in situ it's a mk1 ac11 external reg
Thanks guys I'm also going to change the anti roll Bar bushes while I'm down there it just felt easier doing it from underneath😉.

If the regulator is not working, or the connections are faulty then the voltage will either be much too high, or low. When you rev the engine, the voltage should go up to around 14 volts then stabilise. If it keeps climbing, or just sits at a constant low value, eg 12 volts, the regulator may be faulty. Dont rely on the dash voltage gauge, use a proper digital meter across the battery. There are many other tests you could do but it gets a bit involved.

Now it's off the car ,best take it to a alternator dealer to test ,they will have a rig ,much easier to check on the car ,lots of video material on you tube ,

What might be happening is the relay is not switching on(box on side of turret).
When you rev the car the two contacts (by my thumb) should make contact setting the charging into action, one way to test with everything on the car is to put a crocodile clip around the two forcing a join and see if the car starts charging.IMG_0147 (338x450) (338x450).jpg

If it's an ACR model (built in regulator) they are known for earth leakage, which may fit in with the discharged battery.It's possible for the alt. to be charging the battery when running, only to discharge it when left overnight.

To prove/disprove, disconnect the alt. overnight. If the battery is OK next morning you have the culprit cornered.
