    Original Radio Bracketry

Looking for some help please! I appreciate there are various posts on this already but can anyone advise on what the original Bracketry and fascia plates would have been to fit a standard twin spindle radios into the hole in the centre console?

The aperture in my Stag is standard (for an 8 track?) as far as I can tell but I want to mount a period radio but need the Bracketry!

Could anyone help please with photos, info, dimensions etc etc. I'm happy to fabricate stuff but want it to be as right as it can be! Of course if anyone has unwanted Bracketry I'm happy to exchange for beer tokens!!!

    Cheers
    John

John. To the best of my knowledge there is no special bracketry for the stag, and radios of the period usually came with a universal fitting kit. The arrangement with spindle radios, was to have two plates, drilled centrally, one to fit over each spindle, that were taller than the height of the aperture, but were just narrow enough be turned horizontally to fit through the gap, and then be turned upright once through, to lock behind the wood. Then there was a fascia plate of a suitable size, to fit over the spindles on the outside, and the nuts on the spindles were simply tightened to pinch the wood, and thus support the radio. A further support at the back of the set is not necessary.

The stag aperture was IIRC, an early DIN standard that became outmoded before it was widely adopted. The modern DIN size is quite a bit smaller, though there is double DIN which is bigger still. I suspect (and its just a guess) that the adaptors to fit spindle radio's were exclusively Triumph creations and that there will be no widely available adaptors to fit a spindle radio to the Stag.

Thank you for the various replies, no surprise it's a Triumph special! Will probably give the Robsport solution a go as the home made plate that came with the car is a bit of a bodge. Going for one if the retro sound heads!

There was; the two brackets look like this

            and fitted like this:

the wood in the console is sandwiched between the two brackets

              Hi John
This is a bit off piste but related to your post so hope that's ok.

I've been looking at period radios but would like a few modern features like long wave for Test Match Special and blue tooth for mobile phone use. I've been looking at Tadpole Radios http://www.tadpoleradios.co.uk/ which take original old radios and remove the insides before connecting them to a modern Sony external unit which is hidden away from view. Has anybody tried this option in their Stag? They seem pretty pricey but seem to give the old style look with the benefits of modern electronics.

              Cheers

I am currently having my woodwork re-veneered and they are going to reduce my radio aperture to modern DIN fitting

Nick, thank you - that does seem to tie up with the parts book! Now all I need to do is find some!

Jason - looked at tadpole and decided 'ouch' - nice though!

                Cheers

My car had one fitted when I got it. It was fiddly to operate and it still used a full-size dash-mount radio which was installed in the boot.

I took it out and sold it.

The radio I fitted uses a Robsport mount plate which is ideal.
