    Mot certificate problem beware!!!

My current MOT runs out 13/09. it was done yesterday within the early grace period (ie after 14/08) but because of VOSA computer problems with the new system introduced nationally 3 weeks ago the tester could not log on .He issued a Contingency certificate dated yesterday 20/08. He has today issued a printed "receipt style certificate". this shows todays date as the date of issue with an expiry date of 20/08/16. it shows no history of previous mot`s.

this means I have lost 3 weeks of the MOT. I have asked him to check with VOSA why and if it can be corrected.

has anybody else suffered from this?

    Derek,

No, not that particular problem but VOSA are becoming increasingly intolerant and unhelpful.

I had an MOT where the tester added a vast amount of miles (50K) because he mistakenly used the mileage from the last car tested. I was in a rush to get back and didn't read the cert. when he gave it to me. Although the tester admitted it was entirely his error VOSA didn't want to know, saying I had 14 days to point it out and that time had expired.

Problem is that even though the car has been MOT'd a couple of times since then, with the correct mileage, it's MOT history is marred forever by that anomalous mileage entry which they refuse to change. That's downright unreasonable in my book as it was their agent (tester) that made the mistake.

I can only say to you and everyone reading, please beware and check everything on the proxy cert. you are given before you leave an MOT station.

Today we live in a World where "Computer says NO!"

    Regards

    Steve

    P.S.

It was not my Stag that this happened with. If that had happened, 26K would have become 76K, unthinkable, I'd have gone absolutely crazy!

My recent MOT fail sheet was hand written, I assume this is related to the computer problems?

There are numeous inconsistencies on my mots. non of which will or can ever be corrected, due to lack of ability & or interest at VOSA.

funniest was approx year of manufacture 1970....on a late 1973 car. (couldnt get tax exemption till last year though)

Perhaps I could be 3.5 years out getting round to the mot / other requirements?

Its just another tax system located in a devolved part of the U.K......hmm...........they'll probably have to set up one back in england one day.

from my understanding and this is by no means an expert viewpoint

An MoT fail even though during the grace period means that the car does and does not have a valid MoT. You can bet your arse which Plod will go for in event of an accident.

Now that it is computerised Plod have access to this data from the comfort of the car, I guess that it could even flash up on the anpr box or wizardry that they use. Therefore the grace period is now utterly useless. I get my car mot'd on the day of previous expiry or the nearest point to it.

My ex cowman is now a partner in a garage that does MOT testing. Apparently they had a VOSA man come in this week and say that they couldn't do MOT testing as they could not log on.

In his usual subtle fashion he told him to F*** Off, it wasn't his problem that the government had cocked up yet another IT project, and he had customers with MOT's expiring that would be stuck with unusable vehicles.

Of course it will all go wrong again when all the garages around the country attempt to upload the huge backlog of MOT's from their paper records!

It really does annoy me that the government (all those complete tossers that we pay to have a good life whatever party is in) can repeatedly waste our money on new IT projects that just don't work then go off and buy another equally useless piece of junk!
there should be a law against it!

                        Neil,

It might be worse than that, I support the man in standing his ground. Don't MOT stations have to prepay for their 'slots' every month these days? If so, they could have pre paid already, and if gullible enough to swallow such nonsense it's a fair bet they wouldn't even get credited, let alone get a refund for the lost time slots during the period they could not test vehicles.

                        Regards

My tester told me they had to dump there existing computer and by special ones at their cost for the new system that now doesn`t work!

I've been for an MOT today with no issues that I am aware of. It is a top notch local garage I know well and in sure they would have said if there were any doubts.

Mine went through OK a couple of weeks ago but that's poss before all the trouble started.
The real nightmare began at the local PO when I had to Un-SORN it, change status and walk away without paying anything.
