Electronic ignition versus points on a Stag

After a complete cock up with setting the twin points on my Mk2 Stag due to a worn distributor base plate I decided to investigate the option of fitting an electronic ignition system. Having limited funds, a 123 distributor was out of the question along with the Luminition unit, so I decided to give the Powerspark Ignition system a trial having first sourced a new base plate from LD parts. The Powerspark kit cost £35.95 and the L.D. base plate £41.28. The whole system is simple to fit and so much tidier that the original twin point arrangement. I would advise removing the distributor to a work bench as it makes the whole job much easier and you don't drop the very small screws. Having said that, the need to take a photo of the position of the rotor arm at T.D.C. no. 2 cylinder before you start, will facilitate the re-fitting of the distributor back in the correct firing order. A strobe light is essential when refitting the distributor and firing up the engine so that you can set the timing spot on. I have completed about 150 miles since this conversion and the results so far are great. The tick over is very smooth at 850 revs and acceleration is so much better. My fuel consumption was +300 miles/tank full so I will be keeping watch to see if there is an improvement.

Hi , I put in a lumination system after I rebuilt the engine . And I thought the results were great , long time ago now .

Andy. I fitted one last year when my Piranha system finally expired, and I reckon it is amazing value compared with other systems. I got the same improvements as you, and fuel consumption was also reduced. Considering they only cost £34, and are so simple to fit, I now carry a spare, just in case!

Did the same thing about 18 months ago. My Lumenition failed and I ordered a Powerspark instead of the recommended Petronics. (Senior moment - both begin with a P!). Dead easy to fit in situ. Set up with a timing light and out of curiosity measured the dwell angle, and it was spot on. Cheap enough to carry a spare.

I had run the Lumenition for years without hiccups at all great system from my perspective reliable and neat when time is taken to ensure installation is well carried out , however ive have the 123 hebels ignition system fitted and wow it is so vastly different so smooth and such a performance difference i cant say enough good things about it and it looks to all intents and purposes identical to the O/E and to top it all you have at the flick of a switch another ignition map to play with .I have one currently for driving Mrs daisy runs and another to summon the devil and its great.

                  Hello Steve,

I've heard of the advantages of the 123 dizzy, but would like to know if there are any drawbacks. I assume driving Miss Daisy is fairly fuel efficient, and summoning the devil attracts the attention of Mr Plod, and more frequent fuel stops. Where did you buy it, and did you need to modify anything?

                  Regards,

                  Dave

What model number do I need, I agree with Dave but I need this as opposed to the run of the mill version, this sounds like nirvana to me?

hi Dave yes you are correct in your interpretation lol, i have not found any drawbacks as yet and really don't expect to . the system is easily installed in an hour without mods and will run on map 1 as installed by hebels . you can download the dashboard system to your laptop if you want to do real time mods to the program and i would recommend when installed it is left to a pro outfit to set up your car on the rolling rd they can easily tune your ignition with this kit . it has various features which are quite useful i.e. built in rev limiter the only extra item you will need is a small switch to change maps and some electrical wire . it looks the same as the usual dizzy but without the vac advance unit and uses STD cap and rotor arm which they supply you just exchange your old unit i had a spare so that was easy. google 123 ignition they are based in Holland all the info is on site you can mail them direct sometimes slow to respond but overall one of the more worthwhile mods for power and economy .
