    Auto box fluid dump.

    Car has sat for only a week and some of the auto fluid has decided to dump, luckily into a drip tray, not for re using but better than on the floor.

    A new breather pipe has been fitted and the level was showing minimum on the dipstick.

    Good job I didn't fill to full mark or I would have lost at least 2 litres in a very short time.

    Suspect the breather pipe is very slightly oversized for the spigot so the fluid can creep round instead of up it, it as I stated in a previous post.

    Strange thing is, the level still shows minimum so looks more than it really is.

    I have just replaced my fluid as I also renewed the gearbox sump gasket as it was weeping a bit. Also cleaned the filter at the same time. The old fluid was a horrible dark red/brown colour so I think it was due for a change anyway.

      Has anyone tried installing a container for catchingauto box fluid dumps? How big would it need to be? Really, 2L?

      My BW35 coughed up some transmission fluid yesterday. Maybe no more than 200mL. Frightened me to death, though! Looked just like engine oil on the (shared tarmac!) driveway. The breather pipe is well installed, ending high up beside the brake fluid reservoir. But of course when some ATF does come all the way up and out...
      Mk.2 auto, carmine, had me hooked since '81.

        Just poke the breather hose into the filler.

          Whenever I change my oil I cabletie a small plastic coke bottle to to pipes going the the master cylinder and put the overflow pipe into it and it vearies on what it's dumps out I usually leave it there for a couple of weeks but have also found it will dump out even later what it doesn't wsnt so I leave it and would only worry if it started slipping

            My old BW was chucking out so much, I had a standing order for ATF with the local motor factors. I changed to to one of Clive Tate's ZF boxes. Not only has it transformed the car but I have a clean drip tray!

              Sadly a ZF gearbox is scarcely a distant dream. The coke bottle is much nearer my budget!

              I have no idea WHY an auto gearbox might cough up ANY amount of fluid when it has NOT been over-filled.

                This has been discussed extensively on here before, we know that the converter anti drain on the 35 gives a lot of problems which does not seem to occur on the 65. But if we agree that the fluid will find its own level and it wont go uphill unless pumped, then how does it get up the breather which is 3 times the height of the top of the box or the dipstick which is twice the height. the other thing I don't understand is I've worked on a fair few different makes of cars with 35's and owned a few as well and never come across this before, certainly not on the scale that Stage seem to suffer. The only reason I came up with is that somehow air gets trapped under the dipstick/breather pipe and after turning off the engine the oil temperature rises heating the air that expands and forces out the oil above it. I had a few other issues with my 35 apart from oil dumping and when a knight in shining armour came along and offered me a donor 65 I could not be asked to continue to sort it so it got dumped for the last time.

                  Thanks, Staggard, for your 'trapped air' line of thought; yes, I could imagine that.

                  (Sorry to go over old ground. Even when I try hard not to, I have real trouble searching the forum apparently without a logical AND between search terms, so often end up getting too many hits).
