    Ignition problems

Hi can anyone help ? My car has just been serviced and mot. The car was running oh so nice untill it stoped whilst I was driving it. First the revs dropped off and the ignition went off, 2/3 seconds and it came back on. The second time this happend the car failed to start (just turns over) I have this morning replaced the coil and lumenition and still won't fire up. Many thanks Aubrey

The fact it was running OK and then stopped would suggest a major loss of either fuel or spark and I would have suggested checking battery leads and main earths in particular. However seen as it later turns over and you have replaced the coil and lumenition - Do you have fuel coming through OK?

I would check the fuel pump, ( disconnect fuel pipe to carb and with ignition on and container, check its getting to carbs), then check voltage to LT side of coil (voltmeter or bulb to check 12v is there) and then HT side of coil ( turn it over and check one lead and whether it sparks to earth - but well away from your fuel container!).

It could be the ignition switch ( they have been known to play up), a poor electrical connection or a myriad of other issues, as Alex says - more info needed.

        Good luck - Ian

Dont try to guess what's wrong, do some tests: Turn on the ignition. Does the fuel pump run (tick tick)? Is the IGN light on? Is there power to the ignition coil? Get as much info as possible (before you spend any more money) then we might be able to help.

Hi ALL i think the problem has been solved. I went out to Halfords and bought myself a volt testing meter, male - female clips crimps and the pliers to try and work through the list of problems you all came up with. I don't know one end of a spanner from the other let alone how to use a meter but somehow I found the fault and she has just started on the button and even though on choke sounds BOOOTIFULL as we say in Norfolk. However I can not take all the credit as YOUNG DAN from Faversham Classics ltd pointed me in the right direction by the side of the road on the phone when the car needed recovering. Yes yes I am getting to the problem. Four months ago the SOC helped me find my forever Stag. Clive Tate supplied the new ZF auto gearbox,mk2 wheels and sill trim removed and away I went. In four months I have driven about 5,000 miles and the car is perfect. I recently had it serviced, MOT, new shocks and springs and all bushes running gear replaced by Favershams. I have to thank all the members of the SOC for your continued help. So what was the problem ?? The power cable for the lumunition was taken from the bottom of the fuel isolator. Well, whoever fitted it, bared the wire, pushed it through the hole in the terminal and re-fitted the female crimp. Norfolk roads are not flat and it had become lose. The first thing Dan said to check which I did and just saw two wires attached. My job/work is an Asbestos Consultant so if I can help any SOC member please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you all. Aubrey

                  Nice one. Well done.

5000 miles in 4 months!! That is some going. Did you go around Europe somewhere?

                  Any pics?

                  Cheers...Al

Good move. Get to know your Digital Multimeter and it will reward you.

Typical DIY bodge electrics. I hope you checked all the rest of the connections and now fitted a proper connection (on the live side of the inertia switch)?
