    SU fuel pump.

The fuel pump on my mk1 keeps cutting out, bit hairy today as it did it on the M4. Checked the filter glass and it was empty, put on he ignition and gave the pump a good hit, luckily it started again an I got home without further problems. The thing is should I just clean or renew the points or go the whole hog and get a new pump. If so what would others on here advise i.e. electronic or points type again. Or can anyone advise the best to go for, cheers

First check it isn't the inertia switch. If it is the pump, get a new one. I bought one from LD Parts, it was an ECCO brand. I wouldn't fit another SU.

thanks chris, already checked that one, I have a spare as I thought that was the problem in the first place, but the inertia seems fine, I'll check LD parts as well, cheers roger.

You may know that the SU pump has points which rather like the points in the distributor, suffer from wear due to sparking. If you don't want to run to the expense of a new pump I'd suggest taking the pump off and cleaning up the contact areas of the points.
If I was going to go to the expense of a new pump, I'd go for a solid state version which does away with the points and thus eliminates the wear that occurs. If you do a Google search you'll find many hits to explore.
I love deadlines - I like the whooshing sound they make as they pass by!

Good advice, the electronic pump costs little more than the points type. Try Burlen, who are the official stockists.

When my pump started to play up a few months ago I found that whilst Burlen were able to supply an exchange/refurb mechanical pump they were unable to supply an electronic replacement. I therfore on Ian (Milothedog)s recommendation also went for the LD supplied version of the ECCO.

I had one of those plastic pumps fitted on my Stag by the PO, it gave me a long walk back home to pick up my spare I would not go against Ian's recommendation, and I know LD are a very respected supplier but things move on. For me an electronic metal pump made in Germany wins out every time.

                          Hello,
In both my TR6 and the Stag I have installed Japanese Mitsuba pumps. Not cheap, but "build-in and forget" items. The slight ticking tells you they are working.
                          Good luck,
                          Dieter.

Ironically Graham, I replaced the failing Electronic Hardi one on my car with the plastic bodied one from LD.

just taken the pump off and it looks fairly new, the points were sooted up but not pitted and have cleaned up well. The pump is made in Germany by HARDI, any body heard of them and are they any good, cheers
