    Diff removal question.

A lack of access to one side, and being a lazy sod anyway means I am hoping to remove my diff by just taking off the right hand trailing arm/subframe assembly.
    Will I be successful?
Whilst underneath today, I noticed my 18 month old, 2000 mile half shaft gaiters were already split and perished, so I will see if Norton Commando neoprene front fork gaiters fit!

you could leave all the suspension in place, and just take the diff out on its own, just make sure you've supported the car at the back properly

Dave, when I say the diff, I mean with the extension attached to the diff, so looking at such, it looks like the ears of the diff extension, wont pass the ridge on the bottom of the subframes.
How does one remove the complete diff with the subframes still in place?

Pete When I was doing this job earlier in the year someone sent me this fantastic link to pages by Don Kennedy. In his words The first few pages are good honest advice for the typical Stag Owner, tackling the job in the shed at home, or indeed for the mechanic who is unfamiliar with a Stag.

There's enough flex in the arms to lift the diff up and out, however it can be tough to do if the diff hasn't been out for a while.

          Edit, sorry cocked up quotes

            Pete,

With the wheels off the ground as the diff is lowered the sub-frame arms will also swing down together with the diff extension and they will eventually part. Craig

              Thanks for the replies.
For the sake of two bolts, I did remove the right hand subframe assembly, left the left hand side in place, I think it would have been quite a struggle getting the diff back on my own with both sides in place.
Always an additional problem, two of the stud threads in the diff alloy backplate had failed when I tightened up the mounting bracket, why Triumph insist on using a fine thread in alloy!
Fortunately I had a 3/8 UNC helicoil kit and a couple of 3/8 UNC/UNF studs in my motorcycle parts bin so that didnt hold me up for long.

No, its the gearbox with overdrive that's heavy when putting it in on your own!

Oh yes ! Did that a couple of weeks ago.

The trick I found was to run a strap through the gearlever hole and 'hang' the back end of the gearbox from the T bar. With a trolley jack under the front of the gearbox and the strap under the rear it was a case of little bit of lift at the front followed by a little bit at the rear, slowly but surely until I could slde the box forwards and line it up on the engine.

                    Cheers

                    Julian

                      What a good idea!
When I did it, I had to lift the whole lot onto a flat-bed scissor jack whilst lying on my side under the car!
