    Fuel tank woes

Just taken out my tank to flush and sealwith a kit i got from Frosts (Por 15) to find some one has welded (Very brave) a large plate on the under side about half the tank base in size .I can hear the water i was washing it with trapped inside the cavity which has been created so thats that plan stuffed as i'll never be sure all the moisture is out so the sealing job might go wrong and as it cost £50 for the kit i'm not going to risk it.

Bu66er ,so if anyone knows of a tank going .

    Cheers Steve

hi steve, ive ressurected lots of these tanks over the years no big deal to weld in new metal and make like new again.as long as the repair is a but weld eg cut out crap and weld in plate same size so as no overlap and i usualy tig weld to ensure 100% cat but.if you dont get sorted pm me and i can probably do it for you if it is salvageable, usualy only this area requires attention................steve.

You might have to budget for uprated springs if you try and put that in the boot:P

Very kind offer Steve,i'm sure you would rather be tinkering with your stag thanworking onmy old tank, i think to be honest the plate that has been welded on will now make it more of a job as it wraps around the tank a bit so it won't be just a flat plate as i think i would have to cut all the old bit off first .I'll see what a few emails to stag salvage people come up with .

          Cheers Steve

              Steve,

A trick used "Down Under" to remove water from fuel tanks is to pour a litre of methylated spirits into the tank (depending on the quantity of water), itchemically bonds with the water (causes a bit of heat too) and canthen be mixedwith normal fuel and used by the engine in the normal combustion process.

As you have removed your tank, it may be a way of ensuring all the water is removed by "sloshing"and draining with methylated spirits and then sealing the tank with the POR 15.

              regards,

              Raoul

Had you thought of drilling the plate to release the trapped water and then tapping in a plug?

You could light a match and hold it to the filler neck to see if it was empty........

                        Hi Raoul ,

I think the plate was added because of a small leak which i think would take ages to drain back ,thing is i just won't be happy now i know its got a cavity which can hold water, rust etc.think i'll just bite the bullet and get another normal one.

                        Cheers Steve

It did cross my mind ,think that will be a last resort if i can't get a new tank.

Might want to make further enquiries before buying new.
