    Gearbox exhaust bolt

    I have a 1976 Mk2 Manual over drive

Just putting my engine and gearbox back and the bolt that I put in years ago to hold the exhaust bracket on to gearbox had droppedout and now I have tried using a similar bolt and it goes round and round. There appears to be plenty of thread in the hole and so my question is, what is the thread and is it the same as any bolt on the car that I can compare it to to match with my spares bolts?

The exhaust are all in place now, so cant tap a new thread without taking it all off.

    Any help much appreciated

    Hi Andrew,

Any chance of a piccy or more specific details on which bolt? We might be able to help a bit better then.

    Regards

    Dave

      Hi Dave

On a MK2, there is a bracket that bolts to two flanges / tabs on the exhaust pipe itself. It holds the two pipes together. The mounting is then pushed up until the bracket meets the gearbox, well actually the overdrive unit. There is then one single bolt that bolts the bracket to the gearbox. This is the bolt that I am referring to. In the parts book, it shows the bracket as part number 158382.

Hope this helps and thanks for your response

      Cheers

I've just written a reply and the pic attached was too big so it has thrown me back to the editing window and lost all of my text:X:X:X.

The attached image is a part scan from the parts book. Looking at Rimmer's equivalent there are two HU955's and one HU806. This seems to make more sense to me.

          The HU806 is a 5/16" UNF x 3/4" Setscrew, and if you need to know, the HU955 is a 3/8" UNC x 5/8" Setscrew.

By reckoning the HU806 should be the one you are looking for, assuming that the hole is the original size:?.

          Regards

Thanks Dave, yes you are right, this is the bolt I need. I need to look at it again this weekend. I have just got my new engine running and running in is my priority at the moment, but so is supporting the exhaust. There's enough time is there

Thanks again, will look into it now

            Cheers
