Usually they do reissue the origianl number if they have it on their records. My dad has a personalised plate on his modern and when he gets a new car and transfers the plate the old car so far has always had its original number given back to it, he has been doing this for the last 20 odd years.

In my dealings with the various companies they will occaisionally send you an offer to buy the plate at a ludicrously low price. I have always refused these. Then when they have a genuine buyer things go up a gear and they actually say they have a buyer and to proceed you to confirm that the number is still for sale and also that the vehicle the number is on is currently taxed and MoT'd so that the number can be transferred. I would just call them and ask.

No, you would be allocated a period plate relevant to the original registration year, not necessarily from the area of original registration.

The replacement using the original registration number is a comparatively recent thing.

It goes back to at least the 1990's based on my experience. so would think it depends when his registration was originally changed.

That's a shame if I sold the SOC ***M plate I would like the original number back so that it matches the security etching on the glass

You can ask the DVLA to re-issue the original plate if you have the relevant proof and it hasn't been used on another vehicle. My Son-in-Law's 1998 Rover had a cherished plate on it for several years under its previous owner, but the original plate was re-issued to the car prior to sale.

Since 1999 when we purchased it my Wife's private plate has been on 8 different cars, each time we have transferred it the car it was on and being sold/PX'd has had it's original number reassigned to it.

yes I agree but must be tempting if a good price is offered-it offsets running/restoration costs

                      Only just seen this thread.

I was told my 'plate' was worth £1000 so a company started to market it, I was offered £300 elsewhere (e bay) but I declined.

The company e mailed me last week to say they have spent £50 per month (8 months have passed) advertising and do I still want to sell, which I declined and have put it on my Stag.
I only do what the voices in my wife’s head tell me to do!

The Reg. Number which came with my Stag was valued TO RETURN TO ME net of all cost was £1850

Today I have not sold it but, the valuers have been back in contact a number of times offering to buy it for cash for £350 !!!!!

When I declined and they asked me to reduce my return price (which they valued it at) then said I was unlikely to get that price, I asked why did they value it at that price, they said values have declined !!! 82%.

They said their advertising cost for marketing the number was in excess of £250, as I have never seen in the papers only if you searched the letters on their site did it appear.

Cost me nothing, came with the car, so it can sit there until Farquhar Albert Charles or whoever decides they can't live without it, o, I get a reasonable offer.

If you go to the DVLA auction site you can do a search for prices actually achieved at auction, which can give a good indication to what a similar number may be worth. http://dvlaregistrations.direct.gov....on-plates.html
