    Hi Steve

Mk1 & Mk2 stats are different, try S.O.C. Spares or L.D. Parts and tell them your model.

Bob,I have a early 72 stag with the 20 lb pressure cap on the expansion tank, its the original engine that came with the car from new, would I have a mk1 or mk2 stat?

          Hi Mark

If you have the original Mk 2 radiator with the 20lb pressure cap on the expansion bottle, then you would probably have a Mk 1 1/2 car , which would have a Mk2 thermostat. The Mk2 has a foot on the bottom of the stat. You can get 74,82 or 88 degree stats, I personally run my car on the happy medium 82degree

There is a way of telling a MKI inlet manifold from the MKII manifold from the outside isn't there? Don't know it myself.

Failing that if you take the thermostat out and look inside the manifold, the MKII will have a hole at the back, this is the bit the foot on the thermostat closes off. The MKI won't have a hole so does not need the foot.

The MKII should have a joggle pin in it as well. This should be positioned at the top. Don't know if the MKI has one though. Pic of MKII stat attached. The joggle pin can be seen on the left.

            Regards

            Dave

Picture of a Mk1 inlet manifold. Most obvious differences are the stubs at the front end and the different position of the outlet from the thermostat housing. This manifold would have a 'stat without the extended foot of the Mk2 as shown in Dave's photo.
