Know anywhere near Chesham, Bucks, to get Stromberg Carburetors tuned?

    Hi,

Am a new, first-time owner of a MkII Triumph Stag. Am also a mechanical novice, so lots of garage time ahead of me...

On the few trips I've made in it over the past few weeks, I'm not sure the carburetors are tuned well for the car - it requires a lot of choke and seems to run very rich. My local garage said to check the tuning with someone that knows about Stag carburetors as it may help stop the stalling (even after the engine warms up) and excessive use of the choke.

Any advice greatly appreciated, particularly if anyone knows of a specialist in Bucks/Chesham area.

    Thanks
    Will

    Hi Will,

mine runs rich and therefore hardly needs choke so something not quite right with your set up.

I intend having mine tuned soon so if you can't find someone before I do, I'll let you know.

I would suggest before you start considering tuning that you've got to establish the condition of the carburettors.
Like you, when I took on my Stag a few years ago I was a novice and because I bought a rolling restoration with literally a box full of parts, including the carburettors, I took the time to overhaul them on the bench.

I found the strip down to be straightforward and there's plenty of advice on forums like this and others (e.g. http://www.buckeyetriumphs.org/technical/technical.htm) to help you build / set them up.
When I then fitted them to the car, I was pleasantly surprised when the car started without any problems and setting them up as per the ROM was straightforward. The final bit I did was to then take to a local stag tuning specialist who did the fine tuning of the carbs.
I love deadlines - I like the whooshing sound they make as they pass by!

          Will,

There is a garage in Flaunden called Bowron Motorcare. Bob has had Stags himself and has done a lot of work on mine over the last few years. He's excellent and has a man locally who does his engine rebuilds who also knows how to set the carbs up properly. They are quite close to you and a nice drive through the lanes to get to him.
He usually has some very nice classics in as well. Nice people.
          Best of luck.
          Mike

That's a great suggestion from Mike. might check them out too.

I'm local to you in Lee Common and used a mobile mechanic to set up my carbs, would recommend him.

Also Hughenden Autos is worth checking out, at the bottom of the hill after Cryers Hill, John who owns the garage has a Stag himself - he also knows what he is doing. He's quoting on sorting my coolant system out. I've just rebuilt my engine with CK Engineering in Wycombe who are also very good.

Hope that helps - the North London group meet the first Thursday every month bear Sarrat - it's my plan to go in November, once I have sorted a few niggles with my coolant system.

Maybe we should start a Bucks group?

Thanks Mike - that's exactly what I'll do. Hopefully he can give the car a complete once over and tell me what he thinks. Appreciate the help

Thanks Giles - hopefully I can get along to the November gathering. Up for a Bucks group too, but would feel like an imposter until I know more about the Stag!

Don't worry about that - as long as you are having fun!

I've had mine for 5 years and have learnt loads but still feel I know next to nothing compared to majority of members.

But we a have one thing in common - which is what it is all about, your first month of stag ownership or your tenth car over 30 years - it's everyone's club, right?

Let's go in convoy to November gathering.. Who knows you might solve a few probs with other members?

Thanks Giles - I'll be up for that for sure. Will see if I can get some work done on it first.

Bob worked his magic (air intake leak, among other issues) and now driving well. He's got a good contact for trimming too, so he'll be seeing me again next year for sure!
                            Thanks for the help
