Insist on a new tank replacement or money refund, if the supplier is any good he will not hesitate to oblige

By not telling us where the tank came from we are left to draw our conclusions. Anyway if this a purchase item from a supplier, I would suggest you do what you would do with any item is :- If you cannot get the cap to seal you return the item and ask for a replacement or if you are not happy with the suitability/function ask for a refund. Where is it leaking from exactly Could you be confusing this with another problem like your cooling system over pressurizing of even over filled

Regards which tank, from what you say it can only be either an EJ Wards, Landrover, TR7 or Stagweber one if it's using a standard pressure cap.

Under what circumstances does the cap leak and how full is the tank?

I have the Stagweber tank and it works fine. However when mine started to leak from around the pressure cap it was the head gaskets which were causing the problem. All sorted now and it's fine.
            Cheers Rob.

On the tank that I have the rubber sealing ring on the cap didnt quite reach the ledge in the top of the tank. Tell tale was the clearly audible hiss from the region of the tank once the hot engine was switched off. Fixed in about 15 seconds with a soft hammer to redress the top edge of the tank neck.
I could have used a block tester but didnt need to on this occasion

I have also "stored" a short length of threaded rod inside the top hose that returns to the Header tank. Furthermore to stop it creating havoc it is held in place with a jubilee clip. As an anomaly I have found that while my cooling system still retains the valuable head of extra coolant over the original design and low level dash warning, it also runs 10-15degrees C cooler across the range. Who would have thought 1" of scrap and a jubilee clip could have such an effect.

Btw i have had to store the threaded rod offcut in the top return hose because my Ashtray has been removed, watch this space ;-)

                Hi Richard,

I have had the same problem with my header tank, I think its a combination of the tank and the caps, I am on my 3rd cap now (all bought from reputable and recomended suppliers of stag parts) and have resorted to using the original that came with the car. The caps are all different heights from the rubber sealing ring to the metal cap, obviously the longest being my original, as well as the neck on the tank being quite long in relation to the original expansion bottle. Has anyone else noticed this ?

Which tank is this , I know this is contentious but as far as I'm concerned it's not the E J Wards one as I have one fitted and know someone else with one that has not given any problems.

Unless the type / supplier is known it must be difficult to give advice as to how this can be rectified, is it the elephant in the room?

I only remember rad caps coming in two sizes long reach and short reach. Obviously you cant put a long reach in a short rad neck, but you put a short reach in a long reach neck be it that it wont seat on the bottom of the neck.

                          Hi Staggard,

Every day is a school day ! did not know about the two sizes of caps, I will now try to find a new long reach one.
For those who have asked, the reason I will not name my supplier is that I have not contacted or asked them about this so it would not be fair or ethical to do so.

According to this previous post from the op, it is a stagweber header tank, to save any guessing.

There was a batch of Unipart 20psi radiator caps with poorly made seals. Could this be the problem!
