Water in the vee - again!

Having installed my electric water pump, I started the pump to see that everything works well - and it does, no leaks anywhere. Started the engine and the day after (not then) I see a little bit of water in the vee (less than a teaspoon's worth). I had this when I bought the stag and changed the inland manifold gaskets with Payen gaskets. Its a bit strange because water is now driven by the external pump so why should starting the engine cause the leak?

Starting the engine heats up the coolant which expands creating higher pressure and exposing leaks. if the rad cap is on of course.

yes a perfectly reasonable explanation - I was dreading that someone would reply - 'Head Gasket'.

Presumably now u have no standard water pump ,but a bung instead ,possibly just the bung is not sealing properly ! Regards Graham

          Try K-Seal.

I have had a little water in the vee since fitting a header tank (or more correctly, raising my expansion tank). I know of others who have experienced the same.

I guess that, with a head of water ABOVE the water pump, unlike in the standard set up, some may slowly seep past the pump, maybe overnight, and out of the hole that Mr Triumph kindly provided.

            Cheers

            Julian

Once you have located if it is coming from the inlet manifold when the engine is cold I would try nipping the bolts up.

Yes, but with care. If the holes in the head have not been helicoiled then it is very easy to strip the threads in the alloy.

                Cheers

its tightened to the recommended torque (20lbs if I remember correctly) - not a lot considering its the I/M - possibly the low torque is necessary to enable movement when the heads are hot

Very true Julian also a decent inlet manifold is the key to stopping a lot of these leaks.

seriously? I've heard some horror stories of the radiator becoming bunged up

I have the EJ Ward with a bolt almost touching the water pump cover. If it moved then the oil would mix with water? Its not the case as far as I can see

I agree there, actually seen it on a radiator recently. Had reasonable flow but car still overheated (not a stag!) when we cut it open nearly 50% of the tubes were bunged up. Admittedly not with K Seal, and K Seal is different to most radiator sealants but I would only use it as a last resort. Try to find where the water is coming from before deciding a course of action.

Not with K seal, the old fashioned type. Barrs leak for instance will/can. But K seal is brilliant stuff as long as you don't expect it to work miracles and only put one bottle in.

I had water in the V after fitting a header tank also. I found a product called "CT-1 mirical seal" it said to be good for automotive, central heating systems, solar panels and under floor heating systems. Guaranteed not to clog etc. A 250ml cost £6.45 + VAT from local builders merchants. I only used 1/2 the container and it's worked perfectly.
