I hate to disagree with Ian but I did mine satin and would recommend that. I think it was how it was originally.

          Hi Glenn,

When powder coating, how did you protect the areas of the grille that stay silver ?

          Cheers

                Neil,

The grille is aluminium alloy. The shiny leading edges are unpainted and can be polished. The trick when painting is to either mask off carefully before etch priming and painting, or to wipe the paint off carefully with thinners/rag before the paint fully cures. I used the first method and painted with satin black.

                    Hi Julian
I was rather insistant to the chap doing the powder coating that it had to be done. I did leave it to him how he managed it.
I think it was taped first then tape removed before it was baked then any little bits cleaned off with a razor blade. I was told it was a bugger of a job but as he made a good job I then had hood frame cam covers etc done all lasting well after 8 years.

                    Cheers Glenn

                      Thanks Glenn,

You mention cam covers. What did you or they do about the gauze and would you mind telling me how much it cost ? (PM, if you prefer).

                      Cheers

Hammerite smooth satin. Used some thin masking tape from Halfords, looks ok to me !

To mask the leading edge of the grille I bought a few meters of 3.5mm plastic pipe from ebay (petrol pipe for small engines, just £5). Slit it down the length and it then fits over nicely over that leading edge. I slit it with a hooked Staley knife blade - it was easier than I thought it would be.
Thanks for the Satin/Gloss info, satin it is then ....

The aluminium was anodised to protect against corrosion. It’s best to retain it.
