A "lot of times" would have been perhaps more amenable to Crispin who is obviously a newby to this forum? The search engine on this site is to say the least variable. I just put VR1 in as a search criteria and got nothing found!!!
But put in VR1 Racing and you get loads!!????
It is the general concensus that Valvoline VR1 Racing is the best choice for the Stag. However this oil must be changed every year or 3000miles.
The Halfords/Castrol/Comma classic oils apparently no longer contain the same additives.
Please see HERE

You can get it at Eurocarparts - branches in most major towns or order on line. They only seem to have 1 litre bottles in stock again but 5 of these less the 5% stag discount (enter STAG5 in the discount code box) is £25.13 delivered.
A lot of cars require 20w50 engine oil to keep moving parts lubricated at all times. If yours needs this fluid then buy online or in our stores | Euro Car Parts
RogerNow Stagless but have numerous car projects
So many cars, so little time!

Thanks for the replies especially H and yes I am new to the forum but I did search words which I thought were appropriate to find an answer without success, most of the threads had nothing to do with engine oil. I did this before posting a thread. So in future if I ask something that has apparently been on thousands of times I don't need anyone to tell me this. I am not a mechanic so if I ask a question when I need help I would just like a plain simple answer.

Or my advice would be ...............................
PS I change my oil every 3 to 4K just to keep it nice and fresh and thick and clean.
Plus , most importantly ,better peace of mindLast edited by LAMBRETTLAD; 23 October 2015, 09:32.

VR1, being a "racing oil" has a lower load-up of detergents to carry away contaminants in use, and so ought to be viewed as a "regular change oil". Certainly in comparison with the "extended service life" oils we have become used to in our daily drivers. (although IMHO your engine will love you for changing the oil more frequently anyway).
But it still has the vital ZDDP needed to stop wear on sliding friction contacts like cam lobes wiping over valve buckets, so it is a fair compromise to my mind.
I suspect that our cars, being classics and "hobby cars" in the main, get annual oil changes at pretty low mileage intervals anyway (and I know there are exceptions to the low mileage usage rule, too).Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.
