Sorry chaps - done a quick search and cannot find an answer - I need to remove a driveshaft to do the UJs, can I withdraw the whole unit as one piece out through the brake backplate without having to remove the brake shoes and springs etc, many thanks
Yes, may have to stretch the brake springs a little for them to clear the hub flange, and may be better to take inner UJ dirt shield off, by sliding inner splines from the outer shaft, but will come through leaving backplate and shoes etc. intact.

You will be removing the six nuts to remove the hub flange. When you replace be very careful not to over tighten the nuts as it is very likely that you will strip the stud thread in the trailing arm casting, which is aluminium and prone to degradation with age. I have had this problem and had to fit "Helicoils" thread repair system.

Absolutely right. The correct torque figure is just 16lb ft.
I too have removed both drive shafts and both came out fairly easy, but the reason for removal was to replace the bearings which are the original from April 73 when my Stag was built. I used a puller with an air gun did not disturb the dust,then took it to a mechanic friend who tried to use a 6 ton press,upped it to 12 ton,with heat as well and still nothing moving at all. Before we use a 20 ton press any words of wisdom that he/we should try to 'ease" the shaft out ?? Any suggestions would be more than welcome.
I think the problem here is spreading the shaft end or buckling the flange, I think someone on here made a support plate while in the press I cant remember who.
hi robin , i have in the past made up plates to support the flange while pressure is applied to the end of the shaft to which i have fitted a thread protector which was one moddeled on one loaned to me by Les M . you can use the nut though .basicly it is a round plate between 15mm to 20mm thick with a large hole in the middle to allow the shaft to protrude and 4 holes the same pcd as the studs .knock out the studs bolt the plate to the flange and then set up on the press in blocks and push on the thread protector ?nut up to 20 tons has been sufficient most times ive done it just keep trying it will go with a bang . have a look in may albums there are pictures of the kit there .
