When I had my diff rebuilt by the well respected diff reconditioners in leatherhead surrey , think they are called Hardy Endineering , asked me if I wanted a 3.45 crown wheel put in ,which suggests u can do what u are asking !! Regards Graham
Yes, I'm running a 3.45 diff, takes the edge off the acceleration and gives another couple of mpg on the fuel, with Strombergs I'm returning near enough the 30mpg depending upon the terrain (and if I get tempted).
Thanks for the replies, sounds promising. Id rather keep the correct housing on the car. I believe heavier diff too? If that's correct then it seems advantageous to fit just the crown and pinion.

The other thing to watch is that you get a CW/P for the correct age of diff - the earlier ones were shim adjusted and have a castellated nut on the pinion input, the later were adjusted with a collapsible spacer and have a Nyloc nut on the input. The two types are not interchangeable, the pinion bearings are different and have different sized outers.
