Classic car weekly has an article on the Wedge shape Princess this week, the car they are using has Stag Alloys on it That must increase it's value by 50% surely
Ian.
Wise men ignore the advice of fools, but fools ignore the advice of wise men sigpic
In my very early teens, our gang used to go into sweet shops and try to confuse the shop keeper by asking for a Cadbury's Wedge ,sad I know, but no x box in the old days !
I had one once as my then f-I-l worked for BL and got a couple of lease cars - quite why he chose a Princess as one of them I really don't know but he gave it to me after a while; One day on the way along the lanes from Tunbridge Wells where I lived at the time to Maidstone where I worked some nutter in another Princess decided he'd try to race me (!) he lost his on a bend behind me, hit the bank on the other side of the road and literally flew over a hedge into a field - hilarious to see in the mirror.
I stopped to see if he was Ok which he was if a little shaken but he was quick to say how pleased he was as he hated the car and hope that was the end of it!
This too happened on a dry road - such an 'amazing' vehicle..
I'm sure there was a rude joke about the Austin princess years ago. Something about burning yourself on the exhaust.
Unlike Mike, I loved the two that I had as company cars, even if they were decidely uncool for a 23/24 year old. The six cylinder engine was brilliantly smooth, even if not particularly powerful.
As for rude jokes, BL did one themselves ! They ran a series of adverts for Unipart along the lines of 'can you do ......so and so...' and the answer was something like 'with Unipart you can'.
Well, one of the adverts was 'can you fit a coil to a Princess ?' - they withdrew the ad pretty quickly
I remember that ad' Julian, hilarious and typical of BL/unipart at the time.
i agree too the 6 cylinder engine was very smooth, not as good as a triumph 6 pot but pretty good.
My Dad went from a Landcrab 2200 to a Princess 2200 as well.
Shortly after passing my driving test I was allowed to use it to drive myself to a dentists appointment. On the way I floored it to overtake another car, and when I lifted off the throttle it stayed flat out!
Much frantic hooking of foot under throttle pedal was required as the 90 degree bend in the road loomed ever closer, fortunately the pedal came up and order was restored although it was a push/pull pedal for the rest of the journey. It turned out a single wire on the cable had broken and bunched up inside the cable sheath. If I had gone through the hedge I don't think anyone would have believed me!
