    DIY Paint Time

    Hi Chaps,

I know its been asked before
Just looking for up to date info.....

Where is best place to get aerosol paint in Java Green (mail order etc.)
There are a couple of ready mades available, not tried them before so any advice on these most welcome.

What about mixed to match paints (aerosol), any feedback on these as well please, along with paint types available.

Not a lot of paint to do, mainly touch ups here & there. Biggest open surface on a door & approx 10" square.

Any help or advice on anything to do with this is much appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Paul..

    Hi Paul,

Ready made up cans are not the best way to go.

Find a paint shop (via an accident repair place), take the car to them and let them match it up, they will put it in a can for you or just buy 1 litre tin and mix it yourself and spray it, you'll have loads over unless of course it's 2 pack, then that's another story.

    Jeff.

      Hi Paul
What you want to find is a paint wholesaler that has a spectrophotometer, you will have to take the car or a panel to them with your existing colour for them to match it.
When blending in mask up well, don't hold the can too close to the car, I normally keep 10 inches or more back, cover a bigger area than the repair, a few light coats rather than trying to get loads on in one hit, once the job is finished(few days later) only lightly polish over, avoid T Cut as it will take off all the paint you have put on(unless you go very lightly of course)
Holding the can too close will show up the slightest discrepancy in colour and will have more of a tendency for the paint to run.
If the premises is lacking in a decent temperature I find a hair dryer speeds up the drying process and gets rid of the damp in the working area, don't go too close with it though.
      Best of luck
      Mark
Slightly off topic, my mates dad never forgave me for playing Plaistow Patricia at his 16th birthday party.

My local paint supplier made up the colour coat for my car and delivered it in 2L tins and a couple of aerosol tins all, from the same batch.

IMG_0668.jpgDepends on what finish you want, you certainly won't get a finish like this with cans.

T cut is the finest cutting agent apart from Brasso (Which does work) and if T cut removes the paint you have just put on, then I rest my case.

If he is doing a whole panel then put plenty of paint on and use T Cut or one of the products available from Farecla but if he is trying to blend in a area on a panel then I would follow my advice.

So a poor respay has dust trapped in the paint and a good one has dusters

                  Paul,

No matter how a local area is sprayed, it will always show in time which is why it is better to spray the whole door but make sure you get a perfect match as I have explained or it will show up against the next panel.

If you are just touching up, can you not use a small brush with neat paint?

I used to get asked all the time, "whilst your spraying a panel can you just blow over the other areas that need it to tidy it up". Impossible, no such thing!!! Unless of course you want a poor finish.

                  Jeff.

                    Jeff.
Obviously if you have an exact match have the whole panel sprayed but normally the paint you buy for your old car will not be an exact match so the options mostly are put up with a less than perfect spray job at the bottom of your door but matches or a job like this n/s door on this stag.

Blended in by me down the side of the door after someone opened the door against a wall causing paint to crack on the face of the door.

                        Sorry, still disagree.

The point of matching your paint at a proper shop ensures you are matching what is on the car now not what was new, allowing for age and discolouration.

I have blended in loads of panels the way you describe and although they look ok at first, with time they always show up, even feathering with neat thinners to 'melt' the new paint into the old and if that doesn't match exactly, the different colour will show.

Black possibly, probably the only colour you will get away with, but again will always show up the line from the new paint against the old.

Paul, try it Nibs way and report back, would be good to see.

Nothing wrong with T cut but that is for amateurs and should only be used to restore old paint and try to put a shine back on before applying wax.

                        Jeff.

Two hours max this job took 2 years ago, even if I had to do it again next year it's got to be a better alternative to a whole door that don't match and shows up like night and day.
The trouble with paint shops regarding spraying an individual panel is that they normally cover their arris by saying from the outset they can't guarantee it will come out a perfect match so when you turn up to pick your car up and it's not a good match it's not a nice feeling of then having to stump up a few hundred quid to pay for it, speaking from experience from my last red stag.

See Ian you didn't realise you could get that many shades of white primer, lol

Like Jeff my mate at AK Bodycraft refuses to blend in so I know it's taboo amongst the pros because you don't get an 100% job but if someone can get a perfect match on a bright colour like Java Green I take my hat off to them. Dark blue and black is easiest to match, silver is probably the biggest pita.
