    Chemical strip or Media blasting

    Hi All

For the past week or so I have been reading all about Chemical and Media (glass bead) blasting to remove the old paint from my Stag.

Chemicaly dipping once / twice + e-coating sounds like a good option, however there is a lot of stores on too many forum sites saying bad things.

Please can I have First-Hane advise on the above or the best way to remove the paint.

    Many thanks

    Aubrey

If you have the money then any of the above will be ok but check comments, both pos and neg.

My choice and if you have the time, use a DA sander with a compressor or even an orbital sander will work, if you have the knowhow that is.

      Neither,

the blasting obviously can't get everywhere on the shell and so critical areas are left untouched, although when the blasting media hits the panels at angles it takes off at warp speed and secretes itself in corners and seams only to come out when spraying by the air pressure from the gun !

Chemical dipping is better but has the unfortunate side effect of penetrating where panels are spot welded and sandwiched together which is good, but then unless extreme care is taken neutralising the chemical and getting that into the sandwiched panels also there are reports of "soakout" where the acid/stripping material seeps out of the seams and causes paint reactions. (probably info what you picked up.) .Also the chemical attacks all other materials other than steel (even lead) and so anywhere a non steel repair has been made it's likely to be stripped or damaged by it

So neither are perfect, HOWEVER there are excellent reports regarding cleaning by pyrolysis (heat) called Thermal stripping. The fully stripped down car to a shell is heated in ovens to about 400 degrees which causes the spontaneous combustion of ANY paint underseal or other non metallic covering. Because all the car is heated together there is no problem with heat distortion, and of course no nasty chemicals left in between multi-layered panels spot welded together. Then the shell is dipped to remove any crisped paint left on the panels and various other processes (phosphating etc) as you may require. I've not had it done myself yet but I'm rebuilding a TR4 and I'll definitely be doing it on that.

There are firms around the country who do it one of them being Ribble Technology near Oldham,
Paint Stripping Services including Acid Dipping and Car & Vehicle Restoration. Chemical & PPE Supplies. Based in Preston, Lancashire

maybe a visit to their webpage will give you other info or ideas, price ? about £1k for a TR4.

Hi Jeff, thanks for the advice I think I am too much of a pen pusher for this sort of work. I am an asbestos consultant if you ever need any advice. Aubrey

As I said, everyone has a different opinion.

Get some testimonials from the companies customers, someone must be using them otherwise they wouldn't exist, just not everyone's choice.

I would never start spraying without going over with an air line first and I doubt professional sprayers would either so prep is very important.

If you are not up to it yourself then you have limited choices on which route to go.

I know of one chap who spent a lot of money dipping his Alfa Romeo 33, then painted and rebuilt, only for bad rust to form out of all the seams due to the chemical dip not being washed out/neutralised correctly. It had to be done all again, unimaginable at that stage. This was not years ago, within the last year.

I used paint strip (ref Micky's post), but Preston is a bit of a trek from Norfolk.
Although the car came back with some parts looking like they were about to audition for a collander advert, because it had been powder coated, I could take time repairing them, rather than watching rust forming from moisture in the air.
