If your pumping out water then nothing will help you except a float switch and warning device in a header tank. Normally head gasket or manifold failure is a relative slow loss of coolant and a head of coolant especially with a warning device will give you a reserve before the water pump ( standard set up) runs dry and make matters a lot worse. I paid £5 for my header tank, loads around for that sort of money worth every penny in my opinion.

This is my set up. The level of coolant in the expansion tank is higher than the rad top and inlet manifold and maintains the level of water by gravity. It is based on Staggard's original set-up and works well.
