    Whistle on Stag Steering

I am getting a high pitched whistle on the steering of my '78 Stag.
It seemed to start immediately after I had the high pressure pipe replaced. (the old one was leaking)
It was initially so high pitched it was barely audible but has become louder as time goes on.
The belt was starting to show signs of wear and has recently been replaced but that made no difference.
The level of fluid is good.
I find that when I turn the steering it goes away. (but I can't just drive around in circles!)
Does anyone have any thoughts on this.

when you replaced the high pressure pipe, did you bleed the system, turn the wheel lock to lock

Are you sure that there is correct belt tension. This sounds like it could be belt slip.

Pretty sure it's OK as I had it replaced at local garage. It's more like a kettle coming up to the boil which makes me think it could be a pressure issue?

I'm pretty sure the local garage would have bled the system properly when they fitted he HP hose. It's a well established garage run by an ex racing mechanic and they look after some quality cars so I'm sure they know what they are doing but I'll give it a try over the weekend and let you know.

Nope, tried bleeding it but it still whisles. Have looked in my Haynes and see there is a filter in the relief/flow valve - could it be that? Does anybody know whether that is a big job? bearing in mind I'm not much cop with the spanners and I don't want to break it?

              Hi GRD,

I'm sorry that you've not had a lot of suggestions and I'm afraid that I won't be able to add anything.

However, bearing in mind that you've only recently joined the Forum as this is almost your first post, I did want to reassure you that we're usually able to help much more. It's just that you appear, very unusually, to have come up with something that others haven't experienced before.

              Good luck.

              Cheers

              Julian

                Hi
I seem to remember that I had a whistle from a power steering pump and am pretty sure I changed the pump and that solved it.

dip the reservoir and see if the fluid has bubbles - it may be an air leak into the pump.

Thanks Julian, Much appreciate your comment. I just bought the Stag in June and it had been in storage for a couple of years so I know I'll have a few shake-down issues. I'm reasonably practical with household repairs but a bit of a novice on mechanical stuff. My local garage is quite reliable and moderately priced, but it's always a process of elimination so I'm pleased to have the forum to give me a bit of a pointer so I don't end up replacing everything on the car unnecessarily.
Have had a couple more posts so something else to try - watch this space.
                    Thanks again

                    Gordon
