    Rear Seat belt problem

Guys - bit boring this, but one of my MOT advisories is to make my rear seat belts "pull out" quicker - they are the "Securon" 3 point inertia type and they have always needed to be pulled out very very slowly so that they don't stop when putting on the belt................ Is there a simpler way of setting these up, as, currently, its a bit "hit and miss" with adjusting the angle of the main belt casing which enables the belt to run smoothly when putting on - apologies if this not a common problem / easy to answer, just want to clear up before next MOT, many thanks.

    cheers

Thanks Dave - I will check if the reels are straight, as I think the adjustment is set ok, good point

I thought if it was not original equipment then it didn't get tested . If you fit dr lights they don't get looked at.

        regards

If fitted, they are tested. Same with hazard lights.

The tester will have no idea what is original equipment or not, so it all gets tested.

              Michael, Pete, dave,

thanks for comments - I had discussions with MOT'er about them not being a "standard fit" - he stated they are there so they need testing. I am left with trying to make them work better (preferred option) or remove them (definately NOT) or fit statics.......not keen on statics for difficulty in use + I did read somewhere they are not now legal ??................

              Thanks Again all
              Cheers

I can't see how them being slightly to difficult to pull out is a fail. It's not like they don't work. I bet another tester would have passed them.

Ian - apologies, just to clarify, this is currently an "advisory" which I would like to make good before next MOT. I agree it does seem a bit OTT, but I have been with this garage for some years (same chap doing test) and I have always emphasised that he tells me anything he considers of note that has safety implications - maybe I am inviting stuff to be mentioned but feel better with his advise as these cars get older

I personally cannot see this affects safety, quite the opposite. If they weren't locking soon enough then I would agree but then I am not the tester.

                      Jeff,
At the time he said the belts must pull out (and return) smoothly without having to "assist" them either way - news to me, but became an advisory......

                      cheers

I've heard this before and understand it to be correct.

I don't expect what I'm going to say to be the case with your seatbelts, but it may be worth trying. One of the belts on my daily was a little slow to retract so I pulled the belt out to the full extent of the it's travel and sprayed the part of belt that never normally comes out with a silicon spray. I hate silicon normally, but it worked perfectly.

However I expect the case with yours is more to do with the angle of fitting.

                        Cheers

Thanks Julian - will clean them as you suggest esp as the rear belts don't get used much now the kids are grown up - but the adjustment / angle will as you say probably be key to the solution

                          cheers

                            Ian,
Reading you post with interest - not that can add any advice but because I'm considering installing the same rear belts that you have. I've always wondered with this kit how the static shoulder belt comes out of the hood well without getting trapped or damaged between the tonneau cover and the rear seat. Any advice or photos most welcome!
                            Many thanks
                            John

the seat belt reels are mounted behide the rear cubby panels,so the belt will pull from the bottom,on my own car after a lot of trial and error ive got the seat belts to pull from the top like modern cars,i did have to make a mounting bar/brace,that also doubles up as a rear shock absorber brace
