    Hot Air Intake Hose

The hose which goes from the nearside exhaust manifold up to the air intake box was loose in my boot when I got the car. ('78 Mk2 in Tahiti Blue) It looks like it came out the worst in a fight with the fan blades. The question is should I replace it or not? The guy who sold it to me said it didn't matter and it does seem to go OK without, but I keep thinking it must serve some purpose...

If I do replace it, how does it fix? looks to me that the rubber elbow goes onto the airbox and the other end sits in the metal housing on the manifold, but is there anything to stop it rattling loose and ending up in the fan again?

Gordon. There won't be much point in replacing it, other that for appearance, if the thermostatically controlled air flap in the air filter inlet is not working. The car will run fine without it in warm weather, but in very cold conditions, the warmed air from the exhaust manifold prevents icing in the carburettors when they are cold.

Thanks for the pics, Neil - really helpful. Your engine bay looks immaculate! Good point about the thermostat Mike, guess i'll have to test it somehow - maybe I can do a temporary fix on the old one with gaffertape over the holes and use that for testing purposes.

If your not bothered about originality, then just leave it as it is. You will not notice any difference in the car with or without it. Myself and others who have tubular manifolds have dumped it anyway as there is no facility to refit it

Ive got rid of mine, and cut out the flap and mechanism from the intake. I welded up the holes left by the gismo that opens and shuts the flap. In my opinion looks far cleaner and tidier.
