What size is the nut holding the steering wheel on?
True was thinking on line you could confirm nut size - anyway popped out to garage & a 27mm socket fits steering nut if you don't have a imperial socket which as Ian said is 1 1/16" AF.
Unfortunately Neil, with our good old imperial system it doesn't always work out, i.e. 1/4 UNF = 7/16" spanner, 3/8" UNF = 9/16" spanner and so on., especially with larger size's or special applications such the steering column
