Windscreen wipers not auto returning to idle position

Ever since I have had this car, the windstrean wipers never return to the idle position when switched off rather they remain at the positon on the windscreen when the off switch is activated.

Obviously I dont take the car out in the rain but they are useful to remove the occasional dead fly in the summer .

Does anyone know what night be the most lifely culprit or can point out what I should check.

    TIA

Probably the parking switch which is inside the wiper motor. Don't know if you can buy these separately, or how easy they are to fit.

    Mark.

Mine generally park a couple of inches up from the bottom of the screen until they've been working in a decent downpoor for a few minutes, then if you switch them off, they park where you'd want them to. A combination of old age, wear and a motor with not quite enough go in it to drag the blades across the dried-on dust I guess.

Couldalso bethe metal tab on theend of the wiper rack that operates the switch rather than the parking switch itself. The tabtends to fracture and therefore doesn'tactivate the parking switch properly - can get so bad that you can't turn the wipers off without turning the ignition off! Remove the cover on the wiper motor and check it out. If that's your problem you've got two options. You can get new replacement racks (easily to replace), but in my experience the quality is rubbish. Even the one I got from Paddocks was useless - tab fixed with a couple of blobs of solder and lasted less than 24 hours. If yours can be fixed, get it brazed (soft solder is not strong enough)or buy a good secondhand one from the usual sources.

As you can see a heavily repaired spare!

Thanks for the useful information especially the photograph.

I now feel a lot more confident to dig into this issue.

Ok need some help please... read everything I can find on wipers not going to the park position and looked at the very useful hints and pics on the forum but I think I'm still missing the point. Just taken the cover off wheel housing and disconnected rack and removed the controling armand this is what I see. The end of the rack just ends in a hole to take the pin on the control arm ..no plastic lug to actuate parking

Is this a different version or has the lug well gone or am I just thick and looking in the wrong place... be honest!!

On activating the wipers with the switch the motor oand gearing run at both speeds but stop immediatley when the switch is turned off ....is the right?

Any help gratefully accepted before it rains

              David,

If you look at the picture posted by Seaside Bill, you can see an arm attached to end of the rack. Bill has marked this arm 'Tab moves parking switch'. This fits into a small white plastic runner which is ramped. Underneath this runner you should see a white plastic pin. This is part of the parking switch. The switch itself is a plastic attachment underneath the wiper motor. The switch is secured to the wiper motor with 2 small screws and is adjustable. The 'ramped' plastic runner actuates the switch via the plastic pin and this can be adjusted by sliding the switch.

              All clear?

If the end of the rack doesn't look like Bill's photo, then it could be that the 'tab' or 'arm' has broken off. If this is the case, the best option is to obtain another rack.

If the rack is OK, then adjusting the switch may cure the problem, or it may need a new switch. These are available from the usual outlets. Part 12453A.

Thanks for that Dave .. its clearer than it was anyway. On closer examination it looks like a lot is actually missing including the tab the runner and the pin. One of the previous owners has obviously had a go at dismantling! Looks like I'm looking for a motor and a rack or just getting adept at flicking the wipers off at the right time. Thanks again

You might also like to have a look at the diagram on the Rimmers site. http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/stag/images/ld98a.gif

Might help you to identify what is missing. And of course there are other suppliers as well.

Thanks Brian... I find Rimmers catalogue quite useful for giving a name to something or showing me how to put something back together again!
