    Unusual Tail pipe & Fittings

DSCN3342_01.JPG Hello, just wondering if anyone has seen this before? I had reason to remove the tail pipes but as they were rusted on the clamps were ground off with the angle grinder. However, it appears I have some sort of non standard clamps as you may see the tail pipes themselves have a trumpet type end which fits onto the mid section also with the trumpet, and clamp fits over the trumpets. Hope this making sense! Just wondering if anyone else has come across this type of set up before & if so any idea where I may buy replacement clamps? I had emailed Rimmers & Paddocks but both had not come across these before. The car is a 1971 Mark one, which had been restored last in the 1980s...... any help apprieciated!

Hi Dale i have seen this set up before but not on a stag. You could try the local exhaust centre's they may come up trumps for you.

I have seen these before. The system was originally sold by SOC Spares and was produced to provide an easy fit and pull apart system. The usual slide one tube into the other and clamp together(with exhaust cement) was always a swine to get apart again. So the trumpet flange butted on to the other(male & female type of system - you know what I mean) and clamped with those clamps which have a groove in them to press the pipes together. Interesting the clamps have rusted making it also difficult to get apart.

Yes. I believe this clamping system was usually only used for the connection to the manifold but what SOC Spares was selling used these clamps on ALL the joints down to the tail pipes.

Have a look at the Peugeot 306 they use one similar.

            cheers Glenn

Thanks for your replies, Joel, I have heard a modern one is available as Peugeots use them but larger size. Alex, I think morris minor would be too small unfortunately. Rod,ah thanks I knew someone would of seen them before! I think I should contact SOC Spares on the off chance they still have some!

              Cheers, Dale

Hi Dale, I have done away with the sliding slip joints and had a set of triangular flanges profile cut which matched the manifold/pipe joint (used the same gaskets) and welded these in only leaving the one behind the rear sub-frame so I could get that section out.
                Cheers Ian A

Hi Dale, this type of exhaust clamp is from Mercedes. It's a steel ring which is still available under part no. 1264920481 and two clamp ovals from Eberspächer no. 13.23.676.67.2.20.0 screwed /clamped together with two M8 bolts. It could well be that this type was used on other car brands.
I have these clamps still in my Stag from the two catalysts which I had more than 10 years ago in the Stag. They now fix the two spacers to the exhaust pipes (see pics). A fantastic system, easy to work with and always 100% gas tight. The tulip shaped pipe ends are used today in other systems w/o the center ring and available in the internet.

                    Hi Klaus,

thanks for all your information, that's brilliant! I will check it out, although the clamps I have are different from your photos as mine are like 2 C type clamps if that makes sense, but I will look into that any way......really appreciate your time & help!

                    best regards,

                    Dale

More expensive to make but this is how all exhaust systems should be made - I was impressed that both my Rover 45 and MG ZS180 had a very similar type of connection on the whole exhaust, followed on from Honda I suspect as that was the original base car..
