    Heater removal

Am i right in thinking that the heater unit is held by four bolts only ?

I have removed the two under the scuttle grill and also removed the two on the Bulkhead but it still seems to be solid in the car and i cant see any other bolts holding it in place

    Any ideas ??!??!?!

    Cheers

The large drain tube underneath the unit often holds it in pretty tightly.

Replaced heater motor two weeks ago which necessitated removal of heater unit.
Not knowing about the drain tube gave me several hours of pleasure attempting to remove the the heater from the car.
You have to tilt the unit forward at the top and lift at the same time. Not easy but you will succeed.
Should you be interested new Smiths type motors are still being produced and cost around £60.00.
Good luck putting everything back together again

Thanks gent - I'll have another go at it tomorrow

I don't know know why I'm removing it to be honest but it's another spare part to keep (or sell) I suppose

Got it out if the car - it was the drain pipe as you said Julian - but a bit of brute force got it out

Nothing like resurrecting an old thread !

Can I ask a few questions please

              1) Haynes manual page 198 paragraph 28 Heater Removal point 11 says "Remove the 4 bolts securing the facia support bracket to the facia and the tunnel. Can someone just clarify where these are please as it also mentioned the facia support bracket so i guess it is not referring to the bolts that go through the A pillars

              2) I have loosened the jubilee clips in the engine bay on the heater pipes - should i be pulling the unit forward in any way to clear these pipes of the bulkhead before I try and tip the unit as described above to clear the drain pipe ?

              3) Is the dashboard removed completely from the car to give room for the heater to come out or does it just need to be loosened ? As although I seem to have followed the instructions it still doesn't seem to want to pull away and hence why I think I might have missed some bolts as in question 1. The dash is is tipping forward an inch or so but no further.

              Many thanks

              Darren

When I removed mine the car was pretty much completely stripped down, but the bu$$er wouldn't budge. Tried everything and even damaged a joint on a finger in the process. It all turned out to be the sealing compound around that flippin' drain tube. Perseverance and constant leverage with wooden wedges overnight finally did the trick. Maybe it's your problem.

BTW, I'd remove the hoses in the engine bay from the heater pipes rather than effectively pulling and wiggling the pipes on the heater.

I took a heater out of a parts car. Unknowingly on removing it, I broke the drain tube. I don't recall the ROM mention this critical step. Has anyone successfully been able to dismantle one completely? I think I gave up.

Heater pipes are now removed from in the engine bay. I can see now that the dash effectivevely pivots forward on two further bolts that go into the front wings.

i can’t see that tilting the dash gives sufficient room to remove the heater - is that right ? Ie do I need to remove the whole dash ? And if so do I simply remove the two bolts that it is currently pivoting on ?
