Welding boot floor - Petrol tank

My car has a custom exhaust with two symmetrical pipes, made in USA... It all quickly fell to pieces after i received the car and I have made up new ones. I need to support the exhaust better in the boot floor, the USA solution was to weld brackets to the front edge of the boot flor but this is not a good solution, I should really have something that supports the rear silencer better.

The question is, how far is it between the boot floor and the petrol tank? Is it easy to loosen the tank and lift it up a bit to get access? I can bolt in supports if there are room to drill and fit bolts. Just trying to do this the easiest way possible. Not a good picture attached.

There's a few mm clearance but the floor is ribbed so will give you a bit more.
4 bolts and disconnect fuel pipes. Probably easier to remove than trying to work round and quite easy to lift out when empty. Just be careful not to drop the bolts when refitting.

As John Says, Pump out the fuel in to a can via the electric pump disconnect a couple of wires and pipes and 4 bolts takes 15mins tops and a lot safer, crazy to weld round fuel tanks. You can check for rust underneath and give it a good wash out at the same time. Graham

Agree with earlier comments, don't go near a fuel tank with a welding torch.
It is quite easy to get a tank out as described and you can have a gander around at the same time (in case you are short of jobs to do). The welding will also burn paint off the boot floor which will need touching up if you are to avoid the dreaded tin-worm
I think mine must have had a similar conversion to yours at some time as there's an exhaust hanger under the tank on the drivers side. Not used now as its gone back to an original exhaust configuration.

Agree with others. In fact, I lifted my tank out a while ago and it was nearly half full - only problem was strain on my back

All done in about 20 minutes.

          Cheers

one important point with the tank out is to plug all fuel pipes before welding the floor as one stray spark will do the deed and you do get a bit of snap crackle and pop welding old motors fuel vapour at 5 to 15 % in concentration in air is a bomb

I'm with Julian Graham. No such thing as half empty, it's either empty or partly full
