    broken stud

i have had quite a good night after my head gasket failure, nine studs removed successfully , unfortunately one broke,
am thinking for starters maybe some wooden wedges to try to push it up and if that doesnt work angle iron and bottle jack . it could have been worse !

      hi Glenn
Yes engine still in car, its the very front one . i didnt try rotating side to side as exhaust is still attatched but i will try that first , yes angle iron probably better than what i was thinking. I reckon your idea will work as i dont mind taking chain off
      cheers

Front one is a lot easier Len,
if you can get enough room by moving it back and forward a bit and gradually levering it up a bit you should have enough room to get a hacksaw in to cut through it.
i had the back one to deal with on mine but even with very limited room I got enough to saw through it without damaging the head or block surfaces-very important that!
        Good luck

          thanks Glenn and Mike
it didnt feel very good when i broke that front stud ! ....but i see what you mean though , it does seem an easier one to deal with rather than a back one. I will have another go tomorrow evening .
          Cheers

So tonight have had another go at getting these heads off, one is off. This broken stud is a pain as the head will move side to side a bit , but the stud is turning with the head so not much progress, will have to try and get some angle iron and push it off ....hopefully

              Len,

I pulled up on the opposite corner of mine as I turned it - I stood in the engine bay to do that though! You could also try wedging some wood in between the head and the block to see if you can just get enough clearance (I only say wood as you can be quite brutal with it and it wont damage either mating surface.

              Cheers

If you take the manifold, chain guides etc off (assuming you haven't ) could you twist it, if theres the room, tightening the stud and maybe sheering the corrosion holding it in the head

so, tonight have had another go. i have bolted on a 75 x 75 angle iron and got my bottle jack in there and managed to push the head up about 8mm. so its on the move which is a good result . i have left the jack with tension on and hopefully the head might get bored overnight and give in !
In answer to your good point Ian. yes chains are off, but not manifold , so i will see if anything happens overnight and then try your idea .
Thanks Mike , will try that as well !
                  Thanks

So.. head didn't decide to give in last ! Surprise !
Tonight it's manifold off and try and turn head and maybe as Ian says it will break the corrosion.
                    Cheers

So, head is off ! I did take the manifold off and turned the head but no joy, the stud was still turning. It was worth a try though . So i have cut the stud , no marks on head, The remaining stud in the block simply came out with grips on it . So apart from a good tidy up in garage thats me done until the heads come back from my trustee engineer.
I must say its a stressy job and the next story i read about stuck heads will definitely get my sympathy and any help i can give. I honestly think i got off light as its only taken a few evenings . I have owned and maintained Stags since 1985 and this is the worst job i have ever had to deal with !
thanks for words of wisdom and encouragement

Well done Len. I had to follow the same process last year when one of my studs sheared.

                          cheers Glenn

Good news. As someone who went through this last year, I have every sympathy. It only took me 10 days to get the LH head off after 4 studs sheared.........

Yep, well done Len, it's a job I dread.

I did it on my first Stag, but that was relatively new back then and it gave in without a struggle, however when I have to do it on my current car it will be a different matter, I'm sure.

However, I know people, with experience, I can call on for help and also where there are some of the specialist tools, thanks to the Forum

                              Cheers
