    Chrome Sill covers from Rimmers

I'm about to fit new chrome sill covers, my 75 car didn't have them fitted as standard .

Any tips on fitting them ? They come with pop rivets, but I've read that some people use self tappers , or even arraldite/ glue them on !!

People screw them so they can easily remove them to keep an eye on any corrosion forming behind as they are water traps. Mine were but now they are riveted matter of choice really. I cant see that gluing is a great idea even if they were to stay there. Graham

I would think rivnuts with stainless countersunk machine screw or if there isn't enough meat a low profile domed head machine screw.

I like the idea of self tappers , so they can be removed. Someone else has suggested running a silicon bead seal around the edge to reduce water getting trapped.

That can work two ways it can also stop any water that has got in from getting out. In my experience water gets in everywhere whatever you do to stop it. The PO of my car soaked everything ( and I mean everything ) in old engine oil ( when its very hot it still runs out of the chassis members) the car has now been bare metaled and re sprayed and no rust was found anywhere.

I have just refitted mine. I used 3M high strength exterior double sided tape on the top edge to do away with the channel top fitting section. On the bottom used SS self tapers coated in anti corrosive paste. The dropping out of the top channel removed the need for all those holes in the sill and it actually looks much cleaner without it. Rivnuts a good idea, but would personally use rubber rivnuts instead.
A flanged neoprene bushing with a captive brass nut designed to provide a shock and vibration resistant fixing for component mounting and panel assembly. This demountable blind screw anchor is suitable for applications of many kinds in many conditions, in materials from 1mm to 4mm thick. These even work well in blind holes in solid material. SOLD IN PACKS OF 10 Benefits: Access needed to only one side of the workpiece Can be used in closed end holes Will not mar prefinished surfaces Helps seal out moisture Absorbs noise Electrically isolating Dampens vibration and shock Helps prevent galvanic corrosion Ideal for mixed material assemblies Resistant to weathering in outdoor conditions Removable and reusable INSTRUCTIONS: Place ‘Rub-Nut' insert all the way into the pre-drilled hole until the flange is firmly against the mounting surface. Pass the machine screw through the part to be fastened and tighten until snug.

I have a stainless pair of covers still fastened onto the backing board I bought over 20 years ago, just don't like the idea of the rust trap even if you remove them every so often.

Thought about having the sills 'wrapped' in a chrome finish vinyl though, surprised it hasn't been done to be honest, best of both worlds then, no rust issues, stone chip protection, and look good hopefully.

Very rare, they were polished aluminium from the factory, not polished stainless steel as been available for the last 25/30 years on the aftermarket!
