As a new member of the club, with no knowledge of the stag, can anyone tell me how to remove the rear seat to allow me to get the hood folded. The cables seem to be working ok, but do not release the catches inside.I would be very gratefull if it is possible to show a simple drawing of how this works.

Hi Bill,
Welcome to the forum!
If you follw this link - it will show you a picture of the cable arrangement. There are two cables, one releases the Tonneau cover, and the other releases the pin that holds the back of the hood down.
The seat base will just pull out. The back is held on by two bolts that are normally only accessible from the top of the hood well. I have no personal experience, but as far as I can tell, you pull the bottom of the seat back forwards which bends the brackets, but allows you some access to the hood well.
There are lots of knowledgeable people on here. I am sure someone will be along shortly with some sound advice.
Regards
Dave

Hi billburrell and welcome to the forum.
From the way you have described your problem I assume the hood is up and you cannot release the rear hood rail or the tonneau cover in order to stow the hood. If I am wrong then the following is b*****ks.
You need to get at the two catches just behind the B posts and the third one in the centre of the rear hood rail - it sounds as if you realise that this is the one which is obstructed by the rear seat. Unfortunately the rear seat back is bolted in place and these bolts are only accessible once the tonneau cover is raised and the hood removed from the well - catch 22?
To check the cables are connected at the lever end, remove the seat base by just yanking it upwards at the front, then remove the cubby panel (the panel by the left hand rear seat passengers left arm). This will give you access to the chrome lever and cable assembly. You will see two cables, one is for the tonneau cover, the other for the hood release. Check they are both connected. If not, connect/tighten and try again.
If this fails then there is a plunger in the centre of the hood rail which you must release by having a second person pulling the cable release whilst you deftly slide something like a pallette knife or wallpaper scraper between the hood rail and the tonneau cover. By pushing the plunger to the offside, possibly bending it slightly,if you are lucky, it will disconnect from the locking mechanism. Be careful not to scratch the stainless steel surround of the tonneau cover.
You will know if you have succeeded when the spring over the plunger launches the rail upwards.
If your tonneau catches are also not releasing then access behind the cubby panels will enable you to manually intervene.
Once you've succeeded at this (I hope you do!) remove the rear seat back by undoing the two bolts which are positioned in the steel vertical stiffeners and do not bolt it back in place until you have fixed the problem with the cables/plungers.
If you are new to the car but intend to work on it then the Triumph Stag Repair Operations Manual (ROM) is a good buy - Christmas present? In the meantime you may find the diagrams on Rimmers site useful.

Getting the back seat out when the tonneau will not release.
Tried and tested by quite a few forum members.
Remove the squab of the back seat. The actual back is upholstered onto a sprung wire frame and is held at the top by two bolts. Lower down the spring slides over a kind of tongue on each of the vertical supports, holding it in placeat the bottom. You will be able to feet these verticals if you put your hand under the seat edge. I have used brute force and ignorance, in quite large measure, to pull the seat upwards and flex it sufficiently to unlatch one of the hooks. The seat then pulled forward sufficiently for me to get at the latch. I could probably have undonethe holding nuts on the seat top runner at this stage to make access easier. The hook/tongue got bent a little but I was able to straighten it out and refit the seat back.
Good luck

Hey guys,
guess what, i managed to get my arm up the back of the seat(with a few grunts and groans) and armed with a 1/4 drive 11ml socket, released the two bolts securing the seatback.I then proceeded to undo all three latches manualy, and hey presto up she pops. I dont know who last had a go at the cables, but all three were fitted with electrical plastic connectors instead of niples on the actual catch end.(On this i will say no more) I must thank you both for your speedy response and information you provided and look forward to talking in the future with any problems i may encounter.
Kind Regards
BILL
