BW 35 autobox

Hi

TomorrowI am goingto remove the rear case to change the gasket on my bw35 autobox somebody tell me stop if when I pull the rear case off bits are going to start flying out of it.:shock:

I am doing it still on the car I have removed the sump cover but cannot see what goes into the rear caseing,

Also I read somewere that you are not to use dextron 2 ATF in the BW boxes mine has for the last 4000 miles will this have caused any damage.

Hi Martin

Nothing to fly out from under the rear casing, but make sure you lubricate the rear oil seal area well with fluid on re-assembly as it remains dry for a bit until the governor starts flinging oil about when you first drive it.

Use Dexron 2 or 3 fluid at your absolute peril - it is not suitable for BW35 or 65 transmissions anddon't let anyone persuade you otherwise (I used to rebuild BW boxes in a Rover Triumph dealer so I know this for fact)- the correct fluid is Castrol TQF or it's equivalent.

The clutch and brake band material will suffer if Dexron is used - if you are lucky and haven't given the car too much stick you may get away with it but remember the converter and cooler are still full so you will need to do 2 or 3 trans oil changes to get the worst of it out.

WOW.

The difference having the right oil makes,

Changes are smother & when you kick down the engine doesn't rev before the change down.

Ionce used the oil test on a garage to see if I would use them for a service, after booking the car in i asked oh what oil would you use in the gearbox, answer Dextron III:shock:, i cancelled the booking on the spot on the grounds of incompetence.
