    Anyone fancy a quickie?

Morning all - We have a bank holiday here in Ireland and as such I have just tried to replace the distributer cap and rotor arm. Rotor arm no problem - distributor cap a bit iffy.. Which HT lead goes where? If you start from the top (adjacent windscreen end) and go anticlockwise would it be 1,2,7,8,4,5,6, and 3

    Cheers!

    Mark

Right, I have now rechecked what I put in last night following the original distributor cap settings - or at least I think I did.... anticlockwise 1,2,7,6,8,5,4 and 3.

If they are wrong is there a slim chance that the engine will be bu**ered?

You would have to work very hard to bugger the engine that way, Mark....

Give me a while and I'll try to explain how you get it right.....

Back to you later (some of don't have a bank holiday)

          Arrrrr!

Turn the engine over by hand using a spanner or similar on the PAS pump nut, or if it's on flat ground in 4th gear with the handbrake off (only push forwards please) until the TDC marker on thecase lines up with the mark on the pulley.

At this point it will at TDC firing no2 or no 5 - without taking off a cam cover to check the cam timing marks are aligned (if they are it's no2) this is the closest you'll get to knowing which cylinder is at TDC......

Look at thesegment the rotor is pointing at and mark it with a dab of paint or similar - this is just in case you guess wrong on which cylinder is TDC - try no2 first and put the plug lead for no2 into that segment, and then anti-clockwise on the cap7 8 4 5 6 3 1.

Try it and if it runs, you've got it right, but if it farts and spits back, take all the leads out and put no5 lead into the now marked with paint segment (see why it was marked?), and go 6312784 with the rest....

          Make sense?

Will try that out - but would the fact that all I did was to mirror what was there affect it cos at the moment I aint getting diddly squat. Could you confirm where any of the points are in the distributor if that makes sense. PS Lovely Bank Holiday Ha Ha

            Cheers Mark

No because you can refit the distributor in so many different positions..... it will depend on who last took it out and refitted as to where the rotor will be pointing to.....

Sound! It worked engine running again. Ta V much - thats another Guiness I owe you then.:dude:

Now we are burning a bit of oil about 1 litre per 200 miles and quite smoky when pulling away, accelerating etc. I know it's very vague but any ideas gratefully accepted

                Cheers

Rings are most likely, but if you can get your paws on a compression tester we can confirm this....

Just remember we're talking about Ireland here - recession tester yes - compression tester maybe - I will see what I can do! Once again you've pulled the rabbit out of the hat - a most satisfying afternoon thanks Russ

Careful Mark...... the RSPCA will want to know why you put the rabbit in the hat..... and if the hat was EU regulation size.......
