    Rear wheels

Had a chance to play with the Stag this morning and just have couple of questions.

I have the car jacked up on axle stands and chocked at the front with objective of trying to see what causes a resonance when driving, especially under load. When the car is running in any gear, I get to a various speeds and I can feel the car picking up a rhythm at the back as if it is bouncing. You can easily see it in the door movement if left open. It can be felt through the driver seat. Its not mechanical and doesn't feel like anything is touching but does feel like the wheels / tyres are oval.

If I remove the wheels, it goes so it is definitely the area. I have removed both wheels and used my new DTI to see if there is run out on the drive shaft flange as can be seen in the first clip. Presume this is acceptable tolerance?

I have cleaned the inside of the wheel and the drive shaft flange so happy that the wheel is sitting cleanly.

The trolley jack by the way is not touching the car, but when its running I can hear a metallic clatter which is irregular, is this the nearside wheel catching up with the offside?

I know it would help to try some minilites to rule out wheels and tyres but for today, this is where I am.

    Any thoughts appreciated

I had a similar thing to this and it was the wheels running eccentric because of badly fitting wheel nuts, Russ ran them down on the lath and sleeved them with s/steel tube which has improved it no end. But I will change my wheels ( if I can get it past the banker) later this year to 15" Graham

      Hi Andrew,

      Oh these damn vibrations!

The clatter I think is the sound of the prop joints on the drive shafts as with the wheels off and the arms free to hang the hubs will be at a very severe angle to the shafts making it difficult for the outboard joints to turn freely.

Your're welcome to try my Mini's - i'm going nowhere with my car at present as my vibe's have made me dislike the car somewhat....and it it is very wet!

Give me a bell next week anytime...

      Cheers
      Mike

Have you checked the drive shafts for wear? Does it clonk when going from forward to reverse?

          Thanks all for your responses

The axle stands are on the trailing arms so I am presuming that the car is running at working level.
The drive shafts are the thick GKN shafts and so no wear at all

Mike, thank you, I would appreciate that and let's have that beer first. 2016 will be our year

Thanks Graham, I think you may well be correct as when wheels are turning, if I look at the tyre tops, they move up and down. I have for some time used counter sunk nuts to centre where first, then do up the normal wheel nuts.

          Thanks all

I used to centre the wheels with two of the steel tighter fitting locking wheel nuts first but it never lasted as when you tightened up the ally nuts its only holding the wheel with the nut flange and especially the rear wheels with accelerating and braking its not enough to stop the wheel moving on the studs putting the wheel out of centre.

              I agree with you Graham

I think it's time to try other wheels to prove it and then decide if I go to minilites or sleeve the wheel nuts

              Cheers

I use the tapered nut trick too. I have changed to stainless nuts rather than the ally ones so I can give them I bit more of a nip that I dared do with the ally ones. This technique is working well (used to vibrate before I bought 2 tapered nuts), but maybe I'm lucky that my nuts are a decent fit into the wheels.

                  Hi andrew.
I posted a while ago about this type of problem, and found two things wrong with my car. I also had suffered long with the problem of vibration, and found that when thewheels were repainted the paint had slumped on the hub mounting, causing the wheels to run out of true. Use a flat bed sander to get rid of any paint on the surface, then repaint with a good etch primer to stop corosion. Also check that the screws that hold the brake drum on have been sufficiantly countersunk, one of mine was proud and wouldnt allow the wheel to sit flush on the drum.
After doing this my wheels were fine and i no longer have a problem with vibration or drumming. I dont think that so many wheels could be buggered, it usually is somthing daft, or badly remanufactured. Still, thats the half the fun of owning a classic!!!!!

To be Honest Andrew sleeving the nuts was a stop gap. I had to go through 8 wheels to find 4 that were cast correctly. Even when the wheels were correctly centred on the hubs the rims still had a run out. The 4 wheels on the car are the best I could find still not perfect though. But then again I don't want them to be, Sonia says there seems to be a bit of a vibration sometimes on the car, Yes Graham says its the wheels, Sonia says isn't that dangerous, a bit Graham says, Sonia says well should we not be changing them then, Graham says The money is the problem you see if I get 15" wheels I need tyres to go with them. Sonia says well get 14" then, Graham says Its virtually impossible to get tyres with the correct speed rating in 14's Sonia says, well I guess we Ault to get some then Graham says, but we cant afford wheels/tyres and your new sofa Sonia says well if its dangerous the wheels must come first. Graham says, well if you insist darling

Andrew, i assume that you have tried it without the wheels on?

Sonia seems to be a sound, well-reasoning lass A keeper, methinks.

Yes Dave, the wobble or bouncing feeling goes with wheels off. I was going to try with one wheel on at a time just in case it was one wheel but I ran out of time

Great approach based on logic. I tried this once telling Emma how safe the Aston Martin I was looking at was 😌 Still drive a BM though
