Trans America Stag air filter set up.

I'm thinking of installing air filters similar to those fitted to the TransAm Stag (pictured below)on display on the SOC stand at the Birmingham Classic Car Show. The set up consisted of Stromberg CD175 air adaptors taken from Rover/Landrover V8 3.5 coupled to K&N filters. I'm sure others must have carried out this in the past and I'd appreciate any thoughts, comments or alternatives to the K&Ns?
    Happy New Year to everyone
    Kindest regards
    Ian

I would have thought that from a performance point of view the original air intake would be better due to the colder air being inhaled from the grille, and as far as I am aware the stag air filter is very un restrictive.

The K n N does look faster though

I rather liked the aesthetics of the K&Ns the way it opened up the view of the engine without the original air box?

Got to agree I think they look pretty smart!

Looks pretty, but I wonder what it runs like when stuck in traffic gulping in super heated air from the engine bay!

Not really a problem when you are blasting along in a rally for a huge amount of miles with the airflow keeping under bonnet temperatures down.

I though that is why BL changed filters early on to get some cooler air into the carbs Yep and some warmer air but only with a cold engine.

As with any of these filter types it brings me back to the intake sound wahhhhhhh wahhhhhh when now I'm not 16 I prefer a smooth burble.

I replaced my OE with a K&N last summer and felt that it ran better. But that was in the original pancake box with the two intake tubes.

I think as Neil says you'd have problems with rough running in heavy slow moving traffic, unless you vent the bonnet to let the hot air out.

Apart from Phil Garratt and Kieron Brown on their TransAm Stag, has anyone else actually used this air filter setup? I have seen pictures of the same on a TR6 fitted with a RV8!

I had a similar set up on a Toledo fitted with a 3.9litre Rover V8, but with SUs rather than Strombergs.
I gained 15bhp by moving the air filters in front of the radiator connected to the carbs by long plastic ducting.
