road tax for a 39year 11 month old stag

Hi All
My Stag is 40 on 9th April 2016 but the tax is due on 1st March, How do I go about not having to pay the full tax for the year or even the six months.
do I just pay for 6 months then sent off to get the car exempt, will the DVLA then send me the 5 months back (wishful thinking)
has any body gone thru this.

I would be inclined to sorn it for a couple of months Jim, could turn into a right scenario with Post Office/DVLA otherwise.

I'm afraid you may be a little premature.....

The Rolling exemption every April is for vehicles manufactured before 1st January 40 years earlier, so in April this year only cars manufactured before 1st Jan 1976 will qualify. The current exemption is for vehicles manufactured before 1st Jan 1975. If yours was manufactured in 1976 you'll have to wait until April 2017 to qualify. Check the manufacture date & not registration date - you might be lucky.....

Yep, just been checking on this and Ed is right as above. Mine was registered before Jan 1st 1976 (Oct 75) and is taxed until end Jan 2016, but I have to pay for two months' road tax (Feb and March) to take me up to the April exemption start period.

I've become something of an anorak on this , having been given duff info .....by the DVLA !!

Ed is spot on.....it's free from the April after the 40th birthday of its manufacture.

You have to register as a Historic Vehicle , then it's free....and if you are so inclined , you can then fit old style black n white number plates .

They gave me a refund once my Stag became tax exempt and having already paid the road tax, however, I could not apply until 1st April at the local PO and by the time it came through I had to pay for April's tax.

Jim my car was registered on 18 march 1976 but was built in November 1975 so it will be tax exempt in April. I purchased a heritage certificate to prove this. Check your ld number anything before ld 40809 is tax exempt as that was the first car built in 1976

You dont have to buy a heritage cert if you do not want one, you can pay the heritage people £6 and they will send you an email with the build date of your car.

When I bought my Stag it was 3 years away from being 25 years old and therefore under the old rules was also 3 years away from being tax exempt, I'm still waiting 18 years later :-(

Mine is reg 14.02.72 so could well have been built in 71? Would be interesting to find out, Can you apply online for heritage cert?
