Inner tubes needed?

Silly question perhaps, but do original steel wheels need an inner tube?
I'm planning on ordering a set of Vredestein 185 R14 90H soon and Camskill had them at a very good price a few days ago (although they have gone up by nearly £5 when I checked this morning.)
I have original steel wheels on my 1974 car, and I had planned to order the tyres and get them fitted by my local garage - so will I need to get inner tubes too does anyone know?

My steel wheels don't have tubes.

If they are originals then no they don't need tubes. As long as the wheels have a raised rib about 1/2" in from the outer rim to act as a retaining ridge to stop the tyre slipping off the rim when a large sideways force is applied then you are OK not to use tubes. These ridges have been on steel wheels on most cars since the late 1950's/early 1960's.

Thanks Roger. I must admit I don't know if the existing have tubes - It's not something I've really checked as previously I've just had tyres fitted and not paid enough attention!
I would guess not as I don't recall being charged for inner tubes, but as I was planning to order the tyres separately this time it was a question that popped into my head that I thought I would ask.

Local tyre dealers ,I'm 99.9 % certain would not carry inner tubes in stock,I'm sure if you had tubes they would have commented on them. Wire wheels need them along with safety bands to protect the tube from the spoke ends

You can check by looking at the valves, tubeless have a shoulder overlapping the hole to seal in the wheel, tube valves are just "loose" in the hole, hope that makes sense?

They are the same tyres I have on my car with original steel wheels - definitely no tubes required.

Not if you have the centre laced variety which can be run tubeless. I use these on my TR as when I was doing 12,000 miles per year I was averaging 5 punctures per year from the tubes chafing on the tyres. I am now on my 3rd set of tyres without a puncture (so far)
