Three years ago I changed the starter motor for an upgraded 'motorsport' type, I think I got it from Cambridge Motorsports, but they are available elsewhere. I was prompted by poor starting on cold winter days. The change went well although it was a bit of pig to tighten the top bolt. The new starter cured the problem even though I never got round to putting in a substitute circuit to short out the ballast resistor (in the way the Stag original has).
Now I have the engine out and I am reassembling it I checked the problem with the top bolt hole and found that the motor casting does not allow sufficient space for a socket to go on. I therefore removed the adaptor and cut off the offending section of the main casting, it has no structural reason for being there in this application.
Anyone considering this modification should check the clearance before trying to install, it will save them time and scraped knuckles and ensure the motor is held by both flanges.
Hope this might help someone.
