Head Lights on the Stag

Hi All,

I am just installing the E J Ward headlight kit, a total novice when it comes to electrics but most of it is simple.

I have found a Red/Yellow wire with bullet connector which appears to be the Fog Light supply according to the wiring diagram for the early models pre LD20000 but I can see no reference to where the switch would have been. The supply comes off the main light switch and then I think must have gone to a second switch to activate the lamps.

Any one have an idea where it was and what it looked like?

The MK1 main lighting switch includes switching for the fog lights. On MK2 the 'PARK' and 'FOG' positions were removed (see images below)

when end I fitted the EJ Ward headlight loom I found that I had 4 dipped beams and when mains where switched on I had all 4 dipped and mains on at the same time.I ended up having to fit 4 relays to over come problem Thanks to the forum here a diagram was posted on how to wire so I now have either 4 mains or 4 dipped. I can honestly say that 4 dipped are really greattodrive with and have had no problems with mot.

Great to hear of your experience, did you feed back your experience to Ward's as my set up appears to be that I will get as you do 4 dip and 4 head, I really do not want 8 lamps on when main beam, that may be just a little too much light, too much for the dynamo & definitely too much for the MOT.

I must say I am looking forward to having some good lighting particularly on dip.

Several of us have had the same issue with the Ward kit. Someone posted on here recently that they didn't have this problem, so I assumed that Wards had changed it, but it seems this may not be so. I sorted mine thanks to another forum members help and by adding another 2 relays. One of our local members has sorted a 4/4 light system using only 2 x 2-way relays and without the Ward kit. I keep asking him for a drawing, but he hasn't come across with it yet. My electrical knowledge isn't that good.....

Hi Simon,

Many thanks for that bit of knowledge and the pictures, I do not have any fog lamps fitted but I now have a MK2 lamp switch as I do not have the setting for the fog lamp.

It may be because I think my model is a MK1 1/2 so I have the wiring but not the switch. At least I have part of it if I decide to fit fogs but I hope the new set up with the Ward kit will give me all the light I need.

That fog light wire ends on the loom on the tunnel under the heater and near the radio power wire. Guess it was then meant to go to a dash switch.

Hi Glenn,

I have been checking my kit and now realize that I have 4 relays to on each side so it seems that they may have made an update to the kit. due to other activities I have only just got both sides bowls and lamp wiring installed so now to connect up the earth and live connections and hopefully a full set of lights to show the way.

Hi All,

Had to take my time due to other issues taking priority.

Now got 4 lights installed with all the wiring to offside connected and working great.

Near side partly still to connect to starter motor, will take the car to a friend who has a hoist so that I can get under the car in comfort, none of this laying on my back and scrabbling under 2 axle stands.

Once I understood the instructions it was not too difficult, will recommend the installation at least if not the instructions.

Silly question but if the starter is not connected, how will you get the car to your friend?

John - invest in a set of these as at the 'Victor Meldrew' age comfort / ease are on the list of priorities. They are quite heavy to lift around but worth the extra security plus easy to drop onto a set of axle stands if required.
Found them great when rewiring my headlights to give a bit of extra height to sit on a stool

Ah well there is a story - bought it last June - went holiday the next day for 2 weeks - came back holiday - drove it 24 miles on 2 journeys - a week later went back abroad to work for 3 months - then November / Dec too wet - then left back to work last week for 3 months so NO !

Over the winter I have prepared it for this spring / summer when I will definitely be using it - coolant change / oil change / wax injected chassis box members / wax injected sills/ wax injected doors / clear wax rear inner wings / front inner wings 3 ltrs anti corrosion wax / carbs set / grill resprayed / exhaust resealed & painted / 3 coats of hard carumba wax to paint work / new radio fitted / new seals to rear lights / new number plates / new floor mats / new choke cable / new wing mirrors / new over rider rubbers / replacement indicator lens.

I like a clean car & with 3 months on leave can spare the time to 'potter' to keep it clean.

well your doing better than me,my blue car in avatar,bought that 20 odd years ago was yellow,car came to me on low loader, drove it from the garage door to drive it over heated, that was triumph straight six,pulled that out to have car repainted and fit triumph v8 still not finished then bought another car and still working on that

Thanks for the ideas, I do like the hydraulic ramps, I shall have to have a look at them. The battery is in the car so it does start, I shall just have to be careful with the one remaining cable and only drive in the daylight. My friend is only a couple of miles away so all should be well, famous last words of course!!!.
