Stag at auction - BW65 introduction - when?

    Hi
Please see this stag for sale at H+H auctions.

This car has a 1974 commision number with an A (BW65) suffiix and an early 1974 engine number with an HEA (for BW65) suffix. I always understood that the BW65 was not introduced until late 1975?

If you click in the link for "further photos" you will see a picture of the commission plate that looks very tatty and is held on by self tapping screws. It was originally Mallard.

The car also seems to have a header tank and an expansion bottle?

The reason I noticed the anomaly in the numbers was that my 73 Stag has an HEA engine with a BW65 box but these were swapped in for the originals at some indeterminate date in the history of the car.

I have tried searching/googling for the BW 65 introduction date but could not find anything definitive.

I am sure someone on here can advise

    TIA

    H

The last Stag fitted with a BW35 box was LD41994 in late 1975, according to James Taylor's Original Triumph Stag.

The commission number for that car ties in with the quoted delivery date, but the 'A' suffix seems wrong.

A new commission plate is less than a tenner and would look a thousand times better

Thanks Not only the A suffix but also the HEA suffix of the engine looks wrong? The date of last BW35 is what I undrstood, but were any BW65's actually factory fitted to earlier stags? If not any ideas on the BW 65 indicative commission and engine numbers of this 1974 Stag? Doctored plate and ground off and re-stamped engine number?

Mines is a later 75, registered 76 with one of the last bw35 boxes fitted but I have an A suffix, wish I had a 65, but a 74 seems a bit early?

Riveting it in place as original would look better.

A brand new plate would make me suspicious that a dodgy dealer had been trying to hide something.

Which is the better auto box? I have heard one local specialist saying the BW35 is better whilst another claims the BW65 is better? What are the differences? I have a BW65 and compared with modern auto boxes it is far from smooth.
              Cheers

Not driven a Stag with a BW65, mine has a BW35. Its ok on the move but can be a little lurchy engaging when stationary. I'm sure I've read the 65 is smoother, also less prone to dumping fluid. Most would say that conversion to a 4 speed ZF box is best. But then if you want quiet smoith changes etc. then drive a moderm car and not something designed thd best part of 50 years ago

As Roger has said , I think the BW65 is the better of the two, My 35 changes well, no lurching (that may be idle speed and back lash in drive train) but does leak oil due to the converter dumping it's oil back into the box when stored, will fit a zf within the next couple of years.

The fantastic line of the stag is something to behold and then someone sticks a wicker basket on the boot and ruines the whole car. It must be Miss Daisys car.

Got both BW65 and BW35 on stag and other classic.

ZF on moden car is a pain!

Well from what I have seen the zf seems to work well in the stag, but some have said that the lock up speed is a bit of a pain on the Norfolk roads?, but think the extra cruising comfort will out way this. 4 has to be better than 3

Hi I am sure the ZF used as a replacement in a Stag is an improvement over the BW35/65 providing it is not as stupid as the ZF I have in my modern Jaguar. It is always leaving me in a too high gear after slowing down (e.g. entering and negotiating a round-a-bout) When you come to accellerate the box seems to have an orgasm before realising that yes you want to accellerate. Selecting S mode improves things and of course you can kick down but even that results in a delay before engaging with a jerk. I resort to manual down changes in such situations. I have complained about this to the Jaguar dealership and have had the relevant electronics reblown twice.

Whilst this discussion is interesting it is somewhat off topic.

Consequent on earlier replies the question is that whilst the last Stag with a BW35 was made in late 1975 were there Stags with BW65's made before this date? The car at auction appears to have all the correct details for commission and Engine No for a mid 1974 model with a BW65?
